China’s reelection to UN human rights body regrettable: MOFA

Taipei, Oct. 15 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Thursday expressed regret over China's recent election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), questioning the country's longtime human rights records.

"It was regrettable that China was reelected as a member of the UNHRC," the ministry's spokesperson Joanne Ou (歐江安) said in a regular press briefing on Thursday.

"The Chinese government has long been under strong criticisms by the democratic world for harming human rights," she said.

She cited instances that showed China was not fit to play a leading role in human rights issues.
