TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake shook eastern Taiwan’s Hualien County at 11:42 p.m. this evening (June 11), according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The quake was centered 11.9 kilometers east of Hualien County Hall and was measured at a shallow depth of 8.5 kilometers., based on CWB data.

An intensity level of 3 was felt in Hualien County, while an intensity level of 1 was felt in Yilan County, Nantou County and Taichung County.     [FULL  STORY]

international workshop on the prevention and control of tuberculosis in Taipei on Monday to share Taiwan’s experience in addressing the disease with other countries in the region.

The workshop, which runs through July 6, is being held exclusively for government officials and medical personnel from nations targeted by Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy, including 26 from Vietnam’s Quang Ninh province, the CDC said in a statement.

Initiated by President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), the New Southbound Policy seeks to strengthening relations with Southeast and South Asian nations, Australia and New Zealand.    [FULL  STORY]

The military pension reform bill, which has sparked several protests, would be given priority, with its review expected to be completed in two weeks, DPP caucus whip Ho Hsin-chun (何欣純) said.

Denmark’s Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED), which has a 35% stake in the scheme, said today that a group of banks and Denmark’s export credit agency EKF have concluded a TWD-18.7-billion (USD 626m/EUR 532m) project financing transaction. This is the maiden project financing in the Taiwanese offshore wind industry, Ørsted noted.

The group of local and international lenders includes Cathay United Bank, BNP Paribas, Credit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank, MUFJ Bank and Societe Generale, among others.    [FULL  STORY]

on electronic customs clearance services at airports will take effect by the end of June, which will allow expedited entry for Taiwanese and Korean citizens traveling to one another’s country.

Park Kijun, deputy representative of the Korean Mission in Taipei, said the electronic customs clearance systems implemented in Taiwan and South Korea would be available for South Korean and Taiwanese passport holders at the end of the month, reported the Central News Agency.

The deputy representative was confident that the reciprocal measure would boost mutual visits between Taiwan and South Korea. He predicted that the number of tourists traveling between the two countries could surpass two million this year.

According to the Tourism Bureau, the number of Korean tourists visiting Taiwan outnumbered one million in 2017, increasing by 170,000 compared to the previous year.    [FULL  STORY]

She explained that she likes to visit OFWs around the world. “Filipinos are like that, we take care of each other,” Padilla said.

Shennong’s divine mandate is to ensure bountiful harvests and farmers’ safety, Chen An Temple director Hsu Ching-kuan (許清冠) said.

Garlic was used to make the effigy because of a divine order from Shennong in early January to buy garlic due to the crash in garlic prices, TC Reading Organization Yunlin branch director Chiu Shih-wen (邱世文) said.

The temple also invited a renowned Linnei Township (林內) pastry maker to bake garlic cakes, which were distributed to the first 200 people who participated in the traditional palanquin crawling event, Hsu said.    [FULL  STORY]
