Radio Taiwan International
Date: 2018-05-11

The foreign ministry says Taiwan is looking forward to deepening security ties with the United States.

The ministry made the statement Friday, a day after the US House Armed Services Committee passed a draft bill concerning the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

The committee, voting 60 to 1 in favor, said the Pentagon should help Taiwan strengthen its defense capability and evaluate its military power. The bill also mentioned arms sales, the expansion of joint military exercises, and high-level military exchanges between the two sides.

The committee said Washington should have a comprehensive strategy to counter China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

The foreign ministry said it will closely monitor the next step as the House of Representatives will vote on the bill after discussions.

Meanwhile, the defense ministry also said it is looking forward to exchanges and cooperation that are conducive to regional peace.    [SOURCE]

Controversial Taiwanese group officials detained in Ponzi scheme probe

Taipei, May 11 (CNA) Three key officials of the Taiwan Civil Government (TCG), a group that advocates for Taiwan’s self-determination, has been accused of running a Ponzi scheme and were detained on Friday by the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office after they were deemed a flight risk in an ongoing investigation into the organization.

The controversial group, which believes that Taiwan has been under military occupation since the end of World War II, has been recruiting members by claiming that it alone is authorized by the United States military government to issue personal identification cards, licenses and other passes.

It claims the U.S. military government actually controls the country, and had simply put former Taiwanese President Chiang Kai-shek in charge as its agent. The group argues that the late Chiang illegally stripped all Taiwanese of Japanese citizenship in 1946 and its stated ultimate goal is that Taiwanese people should return to Japanese citizenship, with allegiance to their former colonizer Japan.

Under this premise, the TCG has been able to recruit around 36,000 members and collect at least NT$300 million (US$10 million) in what prosecutors say amounts to a Ponzi scheme, a fraudulent operation in which new members are recruited to pay fees that generate returns for the founders or older members.    [FULL  STORY]

Many journalists said they were attacked or had their cameras vandalized by protesters who demanded that they stop filming or photographing.

China claims sovereignty over Taiwan, which it sees as a breakaway province.

The fibreglass statue was one of six school artworks commissioned by the council and Beef Australia for a week-long festival in Rockhampton, 600km (370 miles) north of Brisbane.

North Rockhampton State School said students had created the design, which featured various national flags in the shape of fish, to celebrate the cultural diversity of their community.    [FULL  STORY]
