Taipei, Sept. 24 (CNA) A former official from the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) said

Su Chi (蘇起), former secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC)

Sunday the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has a duty to establish official communications between Taiwan and China.

Su Chi (蘇起), former secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC), told an academic seminar that the DPP and the Communist Party of China (CPC) — China’s ruling party — hold diametrically opposing views about the “1992 consensus” which Beijing considers the political foundation for official exchanges between Taiwan and China and has cited as a reason for breaking off exchanges with the DPP government, which denies the existence of such a consensus.

The CPC views the “1992 consensus” as an agreement between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait that there is only one China and that Taiwan is part of China. The DPP simply denies its existence, though it admits there were talks between the governments of Taiwan and China that year and both sides did reach some agreements, none of which include Taiwan’s agreement that it is part of China.

The meeting at Lee’s home was the latest in a series of visits Lai has been making to veteran politicians since taking up the premiership on Sept. 8, including to former premiers Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) and Yu Shyi-kun, former vice president Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) and Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Wang Jin-pyng (王金平).

Lee in 1996 became the first democratically elected president of Taiwan, and Lai praised him for initiating a “silent democratic revolution” and overseeing the country’s economic development, Lai said.

“The nation has great respect for [former] president Lee Teng-hui and I come as the new premier to ask his advice. I also came to convey President Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) greetings for the Mid-Autumn Festival” Lai told reporters.    [FULL  STORY]

You could visit Taiwan, a tiny island country in the South China Sea, for its almost

implausible sights. Not to mention its interesting accommodations, plush tea arenas and craggy coastlines with swaggering turquoise waters. However, in this small nation bursting with diversity, it’s best to arrive on an empty stomach, because, as far as I’m concerned, Taiwan is all about the food.

Oh oysters, walk with us

Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, is a scrumptious city to live in. Seriously. Its major sport is arguing over which night market has the best oyster omelette. Though I’m just a visitor, my vote would go to the one in Shilin, where the omelette is a bit chewy thanks to the addition of tapioca starch, and decadent thanks to being soaked in a dense sweet chilli sauce.    [FULL  STORY]

The Web site, www.nationaltreasure.tw, was launched on Sept. 11.

The materials obtained from the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) construct a history of Taiwan from a US perspective, project coleader Lin Yu-cheng (林育正) said on Tuesday.

They enable Taiwanese readers to view themselves from a different vantage point and challenge historical narratives created by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) during its rule, Lin said.    [FULL  STORY]

Chen Shui-bian pardon proposal on DPP meeting agenda

Radio Taiwan International
Date: 2017-09-22

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is set to put a proposal to pardon former president Chen Shui-bian on the agenda for an upcoming delegates’ meeting. The party holds the majority in Taiwan’s legislature, as well as the presidency.

Chen was in office from 2000 to 2008 and was the first DPP politician to serve as president. But after he left office, he was given a 20-year prison sentence on corruption charges. He was granted medical parole in 2015.

A group of Chen’s supporters now says that 86.5% of party delegates have signed a petition calling for a pardon. As a result, discussion of a possible pardon has been put on the agenda for a delegates’ meeting on Sunday. Chen himself has been invited to the meeting, though his son says he will consider carefully whether to accept the invitation.    [FULL  STORY]
