The 29-year-old Taipei resident surnamed Lee was found today by a rescue team, which provided food and is readying for him to be airlifted out of the area by helicopter.

Lee started his trek on May 13 from Nantou and had planned to reach Hualien 15 days later, with his last reported cell contact made on May 15. He was reported missing by his parents on June 3, but rescue teams had been unable to locate him for many days.

Lee later placed a call on June 14 reporting a leg injury and giving a description of his probable location. He added that he had fallen into a ravine and had eaten all his remaining provisions.

The latest rescue team was dispatched from Hualien a day later, making its way to Lee’s probable location despite heavy rains.    [FULL  STORY]

downgraded its level of alert. The announcement at 11am on Sunday morning came as torrential rains throughout the island began to gradually ease.

Taiwan has been dealing with its second major stretch of heavy rain this month alone. The first run of rainy weather at the beginning of the month led to widespread damage to crops and rural communities.

Although the second stretch of heavy rain which began early last week is expected to last through next Tuesday before tapering off, the damage to crops has not been as serious. Nevertheless, Premier Lin called on authorities to remain vigilant, particularly in landslide-prone areas.

Lin said the government would work with local governments to deal with flooding and water damage. He called on the Council of Agriculture to assess relief efforts in farming communities and to keep tabs on stocks and price fluctuations for both produce and everyday goods.    [SOURCE]

summer as Taichung Metro’s Green Line will be undergoing tests after all of the line’s rails have been laid as of May this year.

Taichung Transportation Bureau Director-General Wang Yi-chuan (王義川) said that Taichung Metro’s Green Line is 16.71 kilometers in length. The line has 18 stations and connects the Beitun Deport with the Taichung High Speed Rail Station. Wang said that the Green Line is a rapid transit system with steel wheel trains running on steel rails and the way it was constructed will effectively reduce vibrations and noises to the range of 20 to 45 dB.

The Beitun Deport completed the laying of rails and installment of switches in October last year to provide a ground for running tests on the quality and performances of trains, Wang said. Following the completion of rail laying along the whole line in May, the power supply cabling project has been underway, and it is expected that the third rail electrification system will be able to power the trains in July, Wang added.

The city’s Transportation Bureau explained that the Taichung Metro Green Line adopts the third rail electrification system, which is an extra rail added beside the two main tracks to power the trains.

More than 1,500 people on July 1 are to ride their large motorcycles on national freeways to petition for their right to access the roads.

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications bans motorcycles with an engine volume of 550cc or larger from using the majority of freeways on the grounds that members of the public and local governments strongly oppose the measure.

Motorcyclists can only ride on the shoulder of Freeway No. 3A (Xinhai Road) and expressways.

The petitioners said that the Legislative Yuan has already passed legislation allowing people to ride large motorcycles on certain sections of the freeways.    [FULL  STORY]
