Almost 200 Taiwanese deported to China: MAC

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A total of 198 Taiwanese citizens have been deported to China from other 6773776countries as fraud suspects since last April, the Mainland Affairs Council announced Thursday.

The deportations have disturbed relations between Taiwan on the one hand, which wants its citizens to be investigated and tried in their home country, and the other countries and China on the other hand. Beijing says that since most of the fraud ring’s victims were Chinese nationals, it should take the lead in the investigation.

The first instance which was given prominent media coverage was the expulsion of 50 Taiwanese from Kenya, but recently Armenia deported 78 Taiwanese suspects to China. Cambodia and Malaysia sent 38 and 32 Taiwanese to China respectively, the MAC said.

Each time the MAC receives news that Taiwanese citizens are about to be put on a plane for China instead of Taiwan, it will protest with Beijing, a spokesman said Thursday. Taiwanese nationals should not be incarcerated in China for alleged crimes committed elsewhere until an agreement on such cases was reached, he said.     [FULL  STORY]

Former Thai minister of foreign affairs Kasit Piromya yesterday urged Taiwan to enhance its cooperation with ASEAN nations on civic and political education by sharing its knowledge of democratization.

In his keynote speech yesterday on the first day of a two-day conference on Southeast Asian studies held at the National Chengchi University, Kasit said Taiwan could share with Southeast Asian nations the success of its democratic transformation.

“People in general want and love freedom. That is the starting point for Taiwan to get out into the world,” Kasit said, adding that the nation should work with Southeast Asian nations that have either become democratic or are in a transition and share its experiences and best practices.     [FULL  STORY]

Labor Ministry backtracks on typhoon days

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Two months after supporting the idea of giving workers days off when typhoons hit, Labor Minister Kuo Fong-yu (郭芳煜) said Thursday that no other “major countries” give storm holidays, stating that writing them into labor law required further evaluation.

On July 11, when responding to a lawmaker about whether he supports the inclusion of typhoon days into labor laws, Kuo said “the labor ministry supports the idea.”

During his report at the Legislative Yuan Thursday, Kuo told local reporters that after news that certain department stores had forced employees to work without extra pay during last week’s typhoons sparked outrage, Premier Lin Chuan (林全) requested that the Ministry of Labor (MOL, 勞動部) carry out reevaluations.

Labor groups and lawmakers previously called for a revision of the Labor Standards Act (勞動基準法) to give employees a mandatory day off on days when typhoons hit — entitling those who work on typhoon days to one day’s pay or a compensatory day off.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Sept. 21 (CNA) Trend Micro Inc. (趨勢科技), a leading global software security company, said 201609210026t0001Wednesday that ransomware attacks have been escalating in Taiwan, registering 2 million over the past six months.

That is the second highest attack rate in Asia-Pacific region, after Japan, he said.

In the first half of 2016, the number of attacks in Taiwan was four times the number in the same period last year, Hung said.

The major concerns among Taiwan consumers arising from the ransomware threats include losing photo files, spending a lot of money to clean up their computers, and not being able to access important documents, according to Trend Micro.      [FULL  STORY]

Danhai light rail project aims to upgrade local rail sector: official

TAIPEI — The goal of the project for a light rail system serving New Taipei’s Tamsui District is to upgrade Taiwan’s rail industry by building trains locally for the new rail system, the city’s Department of Rapid Transit Systems said Tuesday.

Simon Chao, head of the department, said that an upgrading of technical know-how is the key to producing home-grown light rail trains.

It is not easy to push for the first local program to build such vehicles, he said, adding that challenges include the transfer of technology in the European design of cars, and tremendous coordination between the Taiwanese contractor and its European partner.

The Danhai light rail project is being carried out by Taiwan Rolling Stock Co. in Hsinchu County, in partnership with the Germany-based Voith Engineering Services, which is providing services in various sectors, including transportation and automation. The two companies have been commissioned to design, manufacture and test the rail system.

The model will help the Taiwanese company to learn the design and system integration abilities from the German company, the department said.     [FULL  STORY]

Halt to forced eviction projects urged

The China Post

By: Sun Hsin Hsuan

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Demonstrators outside the Interior Ministry demanded Tuesday that the government suspend all development projects that depend on forced evictions.

Protesters who faced eviction stood outside the ministry, joined by members of the Taiwan Alliance of Anti-Forced Eviction (反迫遷陣線) and the Taiwan Association for Human Rights (台灣人權促進會).

They condemned the government for pushing through development projects that they claimed enriched big corporations by violating individuals’ right to housing.

Homeowners affected by forced evictions should be included in the planning stage of the government’s development projects, they said.

They also said that laws governing urban renewal plans should be amended before the government proceeds with any current project.

Demonstrators asked the government to promise that all progress on the projects would be suspended until the requests were met.      [FULL  STORY]
