Wednesday on allegations that he was President Ma Ying-jeou 2.0 and Democratic Progressive Party presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen was a female version of Ma.

Since Chu replaced Legislative Vice Speaker Hung Hsiu-chu as the ruling party’s presidential contender last Saturday, accusations have been leveled at him that he is nothing more but a new version of the incumbent president.

Recording a TV interview Wednesday, Chu replied to the comparisons by saying he was more realistic and practical in facing the issues, while Tsai liked to remain vague.     [FULL  STORY]

giving teenagers the chance to see more movies in the theater, an official from the country’s Ministry of Culture said Tuesday.

Films in Taiwan are now being classified into five categories instead of the previous four. The new rules took effect on Oct. 16.

Before the revision, films were rated “restricted” (viewing not permitted for those under 18), “parental guidance” (viewing not permitted for children under 12), “protected” (viewing not permitted for children under six; children between six and 11 must be accompanied by adults), and “general audience” (viewing permitted for audiences of all ages).

Under the new rule, the parental guidance category is divided into two categories: one that bars people under 12 from seeing a movie and the other that bars those under 15 from seeing a movie.     [FULL  STORY]

were stable, Minister of Foreign Affairs David Lin (林永樂) yesterday said that he could not predict how they would develop in the latter half of the year amid speculation of Chinese interference in the run-up to January’s presidential and legislative elections.

Responding to a question by Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Huang Wei-cher (黃偉哲) at a meeting of the legislature’s Foreign and National Defense Committee, Lin said that diplomatic ties with Central and South American allies were stable and the ministry would continue to monitor developments amid rumors that Beijing might try to sabotage Taiwan’s efforts.

Lin rated the current state of diplomatic ties as a “green light,” but added that “predicting [the second half] is difficult, as it depends on the outcome of the coming elections.”     [FULL  STORY]

Ing-wen was 17 percent ahead of Kuomintang Chairman Eric Liluan Chu, according to an opinion poll released by cable station TVBS Tuesday.

The KMT only nominated Chu as its candidate in the January 16 election last Saturday, partly because its previous candidate, Hung Hsiu-chu, performed so poorly in the polls.

If the presidential election were held now, Tsai would receive 46 percent of the vote, Chu 29 percent and People First Party Chairman James Soong 10 percent, the poll said.

While the opposition leader was still far ahead, her lead had shrunk by 2 percent, according to the survey.

The video had received over 1.1 million hits on YouTube less than 24 hours after its release.

Members of the group were selected from the South Korean TV talent show “Sixteen” earlier this year. The show saw girls from different countries showing off their singing and dancing talents in a competition to become a member of Twice.

The group was formed by JYP Entertainment, which manages several groups that are popular in Asia, including Wonder Girls and Miss A.

Chu, said Monday that young people in Taiwan will have misgivings if the government “leaps” into “pure political talks” with China.

Cross-strait relations should develop step by step, Chu said, noting that his party insists on developing ties with China based on the 1992 Consensus — a tacit understanding between the KMT and Beijing that there is only “one China,” with each side free to interpret what that means.

Based on that consensus, President Ma Ying-jeou has set a guideline for Taiwan’s China policy — “No unification, no independence and no use of force” — a guideline that has helped promote the peaceful development of cross-strait ties, Chu said during a TV interview.     [FULL  STORY]

US needs to normalize ties with Taiwan: ex-US official

BELLWETHER:American Enterprise Institute academic Gary Schmitt said that January’s elections would test if Beijing is turning into a benign or not-so-benign power

The US should normalize relations with Taiwan “as much as possible,” a former senior congressional official said.

Gary Schmitt, a former staff director of the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence who is now an academic at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), said Washington should overturn the self-imposed strictures on relations that are required neither by domestic nor international law.

“Bringing democratic Taiwan in from the cold is as important as Washington’s opening to Cuba — arguably far more so,” he wrote in a commentary published by the Wall Street Journal.

Taiwan has been denied recognition as a sovereign state by the US “based on the diplomatic hocus pocus that there is only one China,” he said, adding that upholding the “one China” policy is a “charade.”     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Oct. 19 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Monday that 18514893it is likely to issue a sea warning for Tropical Storm Koppu on Tuesday afternoon even though the weather system has weakened from a typhoon and its strength continues to weaken.

The bureau said Koppu is now located around 400 kilometers south of Eluanpi, the southernmost tip of Taiwan, and is slowly moving in a north-northeast direction that will change to an east-northeast course.

Koppu will leave Luzon in the Philippines Tuesday morning and enter the Bashi Channel, the bureau said.

Judging from its current path, the tropical storm could move northward toward Taiwan, but as its strength dissipates and the storm’s radius shrinks, it remains uncertain how much it will affect Taiwan.     [FULL  STORY]
