Taipei, Aug. 8 (CNA) The Food and Drug Administration said Friday that tests on sandwiches made by Taiwanese brand Horng Ryen Jen did not have salmonella after the company’s sandwiches left some people sick. The FDA said the tests only showed Staphylococcus aureuse, a bacteria that is commonly found in the environment but not generally harmful to people.

The FDA conducted the tests after Hong Kong authorities banned people from bringing Horng Ryen Jen sandwiches into the former British colony on Aug. 3 following reports that the sandwiches had made people sick.

A total of 84 people in Hong Kong had fallen sick after eating the sandwiches as of Aug. 6, according to Hong Kong authorities, but the FDA said it remains unclear what caused the problem.     [FULL  STORY]

Nations (ASEAN) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is not a proper platform for discussing the South China Sea issue but an important one for promoting regional cooperation.

Top of the agenda of the meeting is the establishment of the ASEAN Community and the Post-2015 Vision, as the ten-nation bloc is in the final stages of realizing the goal of establishing an ASEAN Community that involves a plan to create a common economic, political-security and socio-cultural region by the end of this year.

In this sense, participants of the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and following meetings need to discuss regional cooperation in such fields as trade and economy, communication, and non-traditional security in East Asia.

Beijing feels that multilateral forums have never been an appropriate place for discussing specific bilateral disputes, and attempts to do so can not help resolve the underlying issues as proven by past experiences. On the contrary, hyping up the South China Sea issue will make the already tense situation there worse.     [FULL  STORY]

Lee’s announcement came on the heels of Soong’s declaration of his presidential bid in the morning.

Lee said he has been thinking about Taiwan’s future since July 19, when the KMT nominated its presidential candidate at its national congress, adding that Soong is the only person who could put an end to the havoc the nation has been enduring in recent years and construct a “right path” for it.     [FULL  STORY]

Viewed from the ground, the monument, which the county government said was a swinhoe pheasant, is a single length of blue-colored metal, curved slightly upward at either end.

The pedestal on which it rests is decorated with representations of Alishan (阿里山), the iconic Alishan Forest Railway trains and other tourist attractions, with pottery pieces made in Singang Township (新港).     [FULL  STORY]

The Republic of China government has invited David Roosevelt, grandson of President Roosevelt; Mary Jean Eisenhower, granddaughter of President Eisenhower; and Clifton Truman Daniel, grandson of President Truman, among other foreign nationals, to attend the commemorative events in Taiwan scheduled to take place from mid-August to late October, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.

Roosevelt and Truman served as president during the war, while Eisenhower was the supreme Allied commander in Europe. His main contribution to the security of the ROC came when Taiwan was under strong threat of Communist invasion from mainland China in the 1950s. As president, Eisenhower signed the Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty in 1954.     [FULL  STORY]

Tainan City accounted for nine out of 10 of the cases in that period with 102 local transmission cases, while 10 were confirmed in Kaohsiung City, and 1 each was confirmed in Chiayi County and Pingtung County.    [FULL  STORY]
