“There is no such thing as ‘sharing the pain’ when it comes to air pollution. The difference is stark, depending on where you live,” Chan said at a health forum in Taipei.     [FULL  STORY]

A China-based Taiwanese businesswoman raised controversy with her suggestion to Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) that, to ensure Taiwan’s future, he should disregard other voices in Taiwan, and just focus on further cooperation between the KMT and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

British-registered Tung’s Co president Tung Shu-chen (董淑貞) was recorded in a video clip making the remarks during a closed-door forum in Shanghai on Sunday held between Chu and China-based Taiwanese businesspeople.

Tung said that there were over 350,000 marriages in China between Taiwanese businessmen and Chinese women, adding that if each couple gave birth to two children and invited the husband’s parents to live in China, “there would easily be 1 million people returning to Taiwan to vote. With this kind of backing, how could the KMT not win the elections?”     [FULL STORY]

As more tea store chains became embroiled in a pesticide scare, food safety specialists yesterday urged the public to refrain from drinking tea made from a first infusion and demanded the government step up its monitoring of pesticide use in edible products.

“There are about 70 types of environmental hormones. Among them, about 40, including dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane [DDT], dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls and plasticizers, can impede proper hormone function; increase the risk of cancer and birth defects; and cause the feminization of mammals, fish and birds,” Academia Sinica vice president Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) told a forum on battling cancer in Taipei.     [FULL  STORY]

INTERVIEW: Albie Sachs shares insight on constitutions

Albie Sachs, a former justice of the constitutional court of South Africa and winner of the first Tang Prize in Rule of Law, is known for his life-long battle for human rights against the apartheid regime in South Africa, and was one of the chief architects in the drafting of the constitution of post-apartheid South Africa. In an interview with ‘Taipei Times’ staff reporter Lii Wen on Friday in Taipei, Sachs, in light of Taiwan’s ongoing debate on constitutional reforms, emphasized the importance of public participation in constitution-making

Taipei Times
Date: May 04, 2015

Taipei Times: During a previous visit, you mentioned Taiwan was once notorious

for its ties with the apartheid regime in South Africa. Tell us more about your views of Taiwan, especially in terms of human rights.

Albie Sachs: During the struggle days, apartheid South Africa was very isolated in the world. When they had a naval review of their ships in Simon’s Town, they would call for the fleets of the world to join them. And only two fleets joined them, from Taiwan and from Chile under [former Chilean president Augusto] Pinochet [1973 to 1990]. We didn’t have high regard for Taiwan at that stage, going out of its way to breach the international arms boycott of South Africa, sending its ships to South Africa.
