The Taiwan Swine Association expressed strong opposition to imports of US pork containing traces of the leanness-enhancing agent ractopamine, saying that it would not change its position unless scientific evidence proves that such meat poses no health risk.

“We will stand against [such imports] to the end,” association secretary-general Chang Sheng-chin (張生金) said.

The Agricultural Technology Research Institute has been studying the impact of the use of leanness-enhancing drugs on pigs, while the Ministry of Health and Welfare has been running a health safety assessment on consumption of pork containing ractopamine, Chang said.

At the moment, all members of his association insist that the government must uphold the ban on imports of US pork containing traces of ractopamine, Chang said.

PHNOM PENH — Seven Taiwanese nationals will be deported to China alongside 24 Chinese nationals despite efforts by Taiwanese officials to have them repatriated to the island, a Cambodian immigration police official said yesterday.

The group was arrested in Phnom Penh last week for allegedly working to scam Chinese citizens through a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service, and Sok Phal, chief of the Interior Ministry’s Immigration Department, said they will be sent to China on Saturday.

“We don’t know whether they will then be sent to Taiwan,” Phal said of the seven, adding he had not been contacted by Taiwanese authorities but that the Chinese government said all were citizens of the mainland.

Wang Dexin, head of the political office at the Chinese Embassy, said any decision to send the seven to Taiwan would be up to Beijing, which considers the island non-independent.    [FULL  STORY]

questioned how plans to build light rail lines as part of the Cabinet’s Forward-looking Infrastructure Development Program would benefit the nation, while urging President Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) administration to convince the public of its policies rather than forcing them through the legislature.

Wu made the remarks on the sidelines of a meeting with KMT lawmakers in Taipei to discuss strategies to streamline efforts between the caucus and KMT think tank the National Policy Foundation in the hope of bolstering the caucus’ operations.

The Tsai administration should not skip the explanations for its policies just because of the disparity between the number of legislative seats held by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the KMT, Wu said.

The DPP has 68 legislative seats, while the KMT has 34.

“The policies pushed by the Tsai administration have drawn mounting public criticism, yet the DPP still forces them through,” Wu said. “If [the KMT] can make good sense [of why it opposes Tsai’s policies], the public would have a perfect understanding of our reasoning. We might be defeated in votes [at the legislature], but we would win public support.”    [FULL  STORY]

The reactor’s suspension pushed Taiwan Power Company’ (Taiwpower) operating reserve to 2.54 percent, the lowest it’s been this year.

Taipower issued a statement on a website glitch that has fueled speculation of data tampering.

On Monday, Taipower’s website showed that the power reserve would be “red” for four days starting Monday, meaning that it would be less than 900,000 kilowatts.

Shortly after the update, the website went offline, only to return with the i

among young social media users over the past several years, but a child welfare organization has discovered risks to child safety in the way the apps, which are easily accessible on computers and mobile devices, are used.

The Child Welfare League Foundation, a Taipei-based non-profit organization, published the results of a survey on Monday showing that 19.3 percent of the most popular online live-streaming anchors — a total of 29 — are under the age of 18, the youngest of whom is an 11-year-old.

Two-thirds of these young anchors are female, according to the survey conduced July 6-7.

On each of Taiwan’s top three live streaming apps in terms of popularity — Meme, Langlive (浪live) and Live.me — the foundation singled out the 50 most popular anchors of live streaming videos who have made their ages known to their subscribers.
