Shih Ming-te to sue over candidacy restrictions

Unconstitutional barriers placed on the presidential ballot deprive citizens of an “equal” right to stand for election, former independent presidential candidate Shih Ming-te (施明德) said yesterday, promising to file a lawsuit after his application was rejected by the Central Election Commission.

“I am here to get a rejection from you,” he said as he walked up to the commission’s registration desk. “Many people will view this as senseless — and it is, but it is only through senseless people taking senseless measures that progress and justice can be realized and defended.”

His application was rejected by commission officials on the grounds that he did not have either a major party recommendation or the 270,000 signatures required to register as an independent candidate.

Four other independent candidates were rejected by the commission earlier this month after failing to present the required signatures.     [FULL  STORY]

the Asia-Pacific region, to express worries about Taiwan’s national security after its armed forces reduction of 7,000 marine troops under the Ma Ying-jeou administration. Experts said the cut has made Taiwan even more vulnerable to military threats and conflicts.

Military experts Grant Newsham and Kerry Gershaneck said in an article published Thursday in the Diplomat that while its neighboring countries are boosting their defense budget and amphibious capabilities, Taiwan was doing otherwise, which Newsham and Gershaneck described as “slow self-destruction,” undermining “both deterrence and the confidence of its friends.”

As President Ma was promoting the “achievements” in office on cross-strait peace and a historic talk between leaders from both sides inside and outside the country , several military experts are seeing the risks underneath the pseudo achievements, so to speak, the island’s exposure to the risk either from China or terrorists.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Nov. 26 (CNA) An iconic bishopwood tree that stands in a picturesque rice 64478626field in the eastern county of Taitung has recovered 60 percent since it was uprooted by Typhoon Matmo more than one year ago. The tree, scientifically known as a bischofia javanica, has sprouted leaves again, and birds are nesting in its branches. The bandages on its trunk have also been removed.

Japanese tree doctor Tokuo Yamashita examined the bishopwood tree Thursday and said it was healing well.

“It can now be transferred to an ordinary ward,” he joked, to cheers from a group of tourists who had gathered there. “It’s almost ready to be discharged.”

It was Yamashita’s fourth visit to Chihshang Township since the tree was damaged in July 2014.     [FULL  STORY]
