performance “Smoke” in Taiwan beginning Friday, bringing the poetic dance production back to the country for the first time in over a decade.

Inspired by late French novelist Marcel Proust’s “In Search of Lost Time” (“Remembrance of Things Past”), the production follows a mysterious woman as she remembers the love and hate among her family members. The dance piece, however, has no linear storyline.

“The entire dance is about memory,” Cloud Gate founder and artistic director Lin Hwai-min said at a press conference in Taipei Thursday.

“What is the dance about? Everyone could have their own interpretation, but one of Pablo Neruda’s poems says, ‘Love is so short, forgetting is so long,'” Lin said, giving a poetic response to his self-raised question.     [FULL  STORY]

near Spratly Islands, a disputed group of more than 750 reefs, islets, atolls, cays and islands in the South China Sea.

Phan Huy Hoang, an official in central Quang Ngai province where the fishermen came from, said a Chinese vessel slammed into the fishing boat with 10 fishermen on board near the Paracels islands on Sept. 29 and sank it. The fishermen were rescued by another Vietnamese fishing boat and the case was reported to authorities when the fishermen returned home two days ago, according to the Associated press. “Chinese actions against fishermen from Quang Ngai province have been more aggressive and brutal,” said Hoang. Vietnam authorities said formal protest will be made to China.

The captain of the boat reported that the Chinese vessel slammed the side of his boat and boarded his boat while he and nine crew members were sleeping. The Chinese were armed and they took away the boat’s navigation devices, fishing equipment and the fishermen’s catch. In the past year, over 20 Vietnamese fishing boats have been attacked by Chinese vessel.     [FULL  STORY]

During a hearing of the legislature’s Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee, defense minister Kao Kuang-chi also said that the ministry has allocated NT$98.2 billion (US$3.02 billion) to cover the procurement from the United States of UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, Perry-class frigates and the Patriot Advanced Capability missile system, as well as a retrofit program for its F-16A/B fighter jets and other weapons systems.

Meanwhile, the ministry will continue to make efforts to acquire diesel-electric submarines to replace the country’s aging sub fleet, Kao told lawmakers.

According to the defense budget for 2016 sent to the Legislative Yuan in August for approval, the ROC Navy is planning to launch the first phase of the project next year, starting with a design contract, and has proposed a budget of NT$500 million (US$15.45 million) for the first year of the project.     [FULL  STORY]

presidential candidate Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) yesterday compared her likely replacement, KMT Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫), to former Republic of China (ROC) president and short-lived, self-proclaimed emperor Yuan Shikai (袁世凱).

“On Aug.14, 1915, six supporters of Yuan, notably monarchist Yang Du (楊度), established a political group called the Chouanhui (籌安會),” National Taiwan University political science professor Chang Ya-chung (張亞中) said in an editorial published in the Chinese-language China Times.

Chang said the group issued a statement saying that the survival of the nation was closely intertwined with the lives of Chinese and that they could not sit back and let the nation head toward destruction.     [FULL  STORY]

NT$160 million (US$5.34 million) on a mayoral by-election should Kuomintang Chairman Eric Chu decide to quit his position as New Taipei mayor to run for the presidency next January, reports said Wednesday.

The CEC also pointed out that even if Chu loses his run on January 16, he has the liberty to bid for another stint as mayor, a situation which the commission calls for an amendment to the Constitution to resolve that loophole.

During a question-and-answer session at the Legislative Yuan in the morning, CEC Chairman Liu Yi-chou told Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Chuang Ruei-hsiung that it would need two months to prepare a mayoral by-election should Chu leave his post as mayor.     [FULL  STORY]

said that the existence of the so-called “1992 consensus” is a historical fact that needs to be respected, while calling for goodwill and mutual understanding from both sides of the Taiwan Strait when dealing with major cross-strait issues.

Hsia made the remarks during his second meeting with his Chinese counterpart, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office Minister Zhang Zhijun (張志軍), in Guangzhou, China — talks that are expected to be the last high-level cross-strait interaction of President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) second term.

“Seventeen years ago today, four consensuses were reached at the 1998 Koo-Wang [then-Straits Exchange Foundation chairman Koo Chen-fu (辜振甫) and Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits chairman Wang Daohan (汪道涵)] talks held on the basis of the ‘1992 consensus,’ which was reached during a meeting in Hong Kong in 1992 between Taiwanese and Chinese representatives,” Hsia said.     [FULL  STORY]

party next year, rather than in which candidate the Kuomintang wants to change, Democratic Progressive Party Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen said Tuesday.

The frontrunner in the January 16 presidential election was responding to the news that the KMT would hold a special congress on October 17, which was highly likely to result in the replacement of Legislative Vice Speaker Hung Hsiu-chu as its presidential candidate by party chairman Eric Liluan Chu.

Asked whether she was planning to adapt her campaign strategy in the face of Chu’s likely emergence, Tsai said the Taiwanese public probably did not care all that much what kind of candidate the KMT would present, since they were more concerned with changing the party in power early next year.

Conducting a campaign meant going along with the flow, and presenting the best possible team and the best possible policies to win the support of the public, Tsai said.     [FULL  STORY]
