he will consider whether to run in Taiwan’s 2016 presidential election but that now is not the right time to make a final decision.

His decision will largely hinge on whether the policies of the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party and the ruling Kuomintang are “hijacked” by their fundamentalist factions, Soong added.

Describing himself as a diligent elderly Taiwanese man, the 73-year-old Soong said he has been closely observing Taiwan in a bid to figure out the country’s current situation.

Soong, who is also a chief advisor to Taipei mayor Ko Wen-je, said he wants to let all Taiwan’s people keep their heads up in the face of the world and the other side of the Taiwan Strait and say what they really think.     [FULL  STORY]

nothing more than a “sitting duck” for US armed forces in the event of a naval conflict, say both American and Chinese experts.

In interviews with the US-based outlet Defense News, Ian Easton, a China defense specialist at the Project 2049 Institute in Washington; Wallace Gregson, a former assistant defense secretary for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs, and Zhu Feng, a South China Sea expert at China’s Nanjing University, all agreed that China’s rapidly expanding land reclamation efforts and militarization on disputed islands in the South China Sea “would not survive long in a war with the US.”     [FULL  STORY]

UPDATE 1-Crew of crashed Taiwan TransAsia plane shut off working engine-source

By Faith Hung

(Reuters) – The crew of a TransAsia Airways ATR plane that crashed in Taiwan in February, killing 43 people on board, had shut off the working engine after the other lost power, a source with direct knowledge of the matter said on Wednesday.

The latest investigation report into the Taipei crash, to be released on Thursday, will say data readings showed the almost-new turboprop ATR 72-600 stalled and crashed shortly after the functioning engine was switched off, said the source.

The findings of the report, by the Aviation Safety Council, will also focus on flight operations, air traffic control, weather, the air worthiness of the plane and other factors, added the source, who could not be identified because the report has not yet been made public.     [FULL  STORY]

Water Park Inferno: Hospital defends inability to attend to burn injuries

‘NOT EQUIPPED’:The cancer center said it did not have trauma staff or a cardiology department, but critics said it was making excuses and had turned its back on victims

Koo Foundation Sun Yat-sen Cancer Center superintendent Andrew Huang (黃達夫) yesterday dismissed mounting criticism over the hospital’s refusal to admit victims of the Formosa Fun Coast (八仙海岸) blast on Saturday, saying the center is a cancer facility, and does not have a burn unit.

“As Taiwan’s first hospital specializing in cancer treatment, the center operates differently from most general hospitals. We are not equipped with cardiology and cardiovascular surgery departments, or the equipment and staff to treat trauma,” Huang said in an open letter published on Chinese-language news Web site ETtoday.

Due to a patient’s right to receive prompt medical care, Huang said the center finds it unacceptable when a patient is sent to a hospital not outfitted to deal with emergencies, as treatment is inevitably delayed so that the patient can be transferred to another medical institution with the required equipment and specialists.     [FULL  STORY]
