In an audacious decision, EDA head coach Yeh Chun-chang started rookie Huang Yi-chih on the mound in a face-off against Brothers righthander Bryan Woodall of the US.
The gamble paid off for EDA as the rookie proved his worth, turning the contest into a pitching duel after early jitters in the opening frame.

The Brothers offense scored a run on two hits and a walk in their first inning, taking a 1-0 lead after the first frame.

Helped by outstanding defense, Huang settled down and sailed through through to the fifth frame.    [FULL  STORY]

Bidding farewell to a Taiwan baseball legend

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Like most longtime baseball fans in Taiwan, I vividly remember Nov. 18, 2001 as if it

were yesterday.

That was the day I joined tens of thousands of people in an impromptu victory parade in front of Taipei’s Tianmu stadium after Taiwan beat Japan in a 3-0 shutout victory to claim third in the Baseball World Cup.

No. 3 — Taiwan’s best performance in the event since 1988 — was seen as a turning point in modern Taiwan baseball history, as it rekindled the fervor and passion of local fans who had lost faith in a sport plagued with gambling and match-fixing scandals.

The squad’s success was a major boost to local baseball.

Immediately after the conclusion of the tournament, the 2002 local Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL, 中華職棒) saw a 70-percent jump in attendance.

The shutout victory — rare for Taiwan against much-stronger Japan — was largely thanks to the near-perfect outing of starting pitcher Chang Chih-chia (張誌家), who later gained fame as a starter for the Seibu Lions in Japan before he left baseball forever in disgrace due to his involvement in game-throwing.    [FULL  STORY]

The Cubs returned home to Wrigley Field with a 3-2 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series and were yesterday ready for their opportunity to end a more than seven-decade wait to return to the World Series.

“We’re not going to run away from anything,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “It’s within our reach right now. But I do want us to go after it as though it’s, again, hate to say it, but Saturday. Let’s just go play our Saturday game and see how it falls.”

For a franchise defined more by heartbreak and losing, yesterday was to be no ordinary Saturday. Then again, this has been no ordinary baseball season.    [FULL  STORY]

Thirty-eight-year-old Brothers batter Peng Cheng-min, playing in his 47th playoff game, put in an impressive performance, making three hits in front of 20,000 fans at a packed Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium.

The Brothers opened their account with a run in the second inning and had taken a 6-1 lead after the first six.

The Brothers scored two more runs in the seventh inning and looked set for a comfortable win, only for the Rhinos to pull back six runs in the eighth inning.     [FULL  STORY]
