next round of AFC Asian Cup qualification 4-2 on aggregate, sending players and fans in Kaohsiung into joyous celebration at the end of match.

It was a home game for Taiwan at the Kaohsiung National Stadium, and the hosts started quickly with midfield dynamo Chen Po-liang pushing into opposition goal area inside the first minute, when he was cut down for a foul.

In the ensuing free-kick, attacking midfielder Wen Chih-hao just missed, with his shot going wide of the goalpost.

Taiwan made good attacking efforts, and in the 10th minute they earned another free-kick from the left side.     [FULL  STORY]

Championship in New Taipei City’s Linkou District for her third victory of the year.

Eight strokes ahead of Feng after a birdie on the sixth hole, the 24-year-old South Korean bogeyed two of the next three holes and scrambled to par the final nine for a one-under 71.

Feng finished with a 66.

The Chinese star chipped in for birdie from 35 feet on the par-four 15th to pull within two strokes and nearly holed a bunker shot for eagle on the par-five 18th.
Jang then lagged her 15-foot birdie putt to inches and briefly danced on the green after tapping in.

“I was like nervous every hole,” Jang said. “Shanshan really good play today. That’s why I got very nervous and then I’m just simple every hole because weather is just so bad. And then just keep going the fairway and the green.”

She kept the celebration short after drawing criticism in South Korea for her flamboyant victory celebrations — a “Samurai Lasso” routine in Florida in February and a “Beyonce Single Ladies” dance in Singapore in March.

Also, before the Singapore event, Jang’s father dropped a hard-case suitcase that tumbled down an airport escalator and injured rival player Chun In-gee.    [FULL  STORY]

in San Pedro de Atacama in Chile on Saturday in a time of 28 hours 58 minutes and 20 seconds.

The win moved Chen a step closer to winning the overall title for the 4 Deserts Race Series this year, putting him in the lead position after three of the year’s four desert races.

Chen took second in the Sahara Race in Namibia in May and fifth in the Gobi March in China in June before fighting to first in Chile.

He hopes to claim the title when he competes in the Last Desert Antarctica ultra marathon, to be held six weeks from now between Nov. 18 and 29.

Chen struggled in the second-to-last stage in the Chilean desert, a 73.4 kilometer test that saw him vomit when he pushed himself to the limit at about the 50-km mark.

He said on his Facebook page that his will wavered at that point, but he recovered to finish third in the stage in a time of 8 hours 53 minutes and 8 seconds.     [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI — Candie Kung (龔怡萍) of Taiwan shot a final round 3-under 69 on a windy and rainy day at the

Fubon LPGA Taiwan Championship in Linkou on Sunday to end up in a three-way tie for fifth, the best finish of any of the 20 Taiwanese entered in the event.

The result was the best for any Taiwanese golfer at the LPGA tournament in Taiwan since Yani Tseng (曾雅妮) won it in 2011, the first year it was held.

Kung finished the day at 9-under for the tournament, eight shots behind the winner Jang Ha-na of South Korea, who shot a 1-under 71 in the final round for a winning score of 17-under 271.

Feng Shanshan of China was second at 16-under, while Brooke Henderson of Canada and Kim Hyo-joo of South Korea were tied for third at 10-under.

Lee-Anne Pace of South Africa and Park Hee-young of South Korea were tied for fifth with Kung at 9-under.

Kung, who had to overcome numbness in her fingers on her right hand resulting from a nerve problem suffered last month, said she was happy with her performance at the US$2 million tournament, especially in fighting what she described as “chaotic” conditions.     [FULL  STORY]

The Chan sisters got off to a flying start in the semi-finals of the women’s doubles at the China Open yesterday, but fell to defeat when the top seeds dug deep and fought back to clinch a 0-6, 6-1, 10-6 victory.

Taiwanese third seeds Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan looked to be racing to today’s final when they took the first set to love, but French pairing Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic battled back to win the second 6-1, before completing the victory in the super tiebreak in a match that lasted exactly an hour.

The Chan sisters saved both break points they faced in the first set and converted three of six, but the roles were reversed in the second, when the French duo saved both break points they faced and converted two of three.

Garcia and Mladenovic, top of the WTA Tour’s Road to Singapore doubles standings, won 47 of the 89 points contested to improve their record over the Taiwanese sisters to 2-0 following their victory in the semi-finals in Sydney in January.    [FULL  STORY]

at the National Stadium in Kaohsiung last night, with in-form striker Wu Chun-ching grabbing a brace.

The match started a flurry of action at either end, with Timor-Leste going ahead inside five minutes and the hosts equalizing two minutes later.

Wu netted his second goal in the 38th minute, and despite plenty of opportunities, neither team could score in the second half, handing Taiwan the advantage heading into the return leg on Tuesday.

Both matches are to take place in Kaohsiung, as Timor-Leste gave up hosting rights with their national stadium under construction. Yesterday’s game was regarded as a home match for Timor-Leste.    [FULL  STORY]

101-94 NBA pre-season win over the Detroit Pistons at Barclays Center on Thursday.

The point guard connected on seven of 11 shots, including five-of-eight from three-point range in 17 minutes on the floor.

He said the work he’s been doing on his jump shot is paying off.

“It felt great,” Lin said. “I got in a zone and honestly if I wasn’t so caught up in trying to hit some more, I think my last two would have dropped.”

Lin, the NBA’s first player of Chinese or Taiwanese heritage, agreed to a three-year deal with the Nets worth a reported US$36 million in July, after turning down a US$2.2 million offer to return to Charlotte for next season.

The move brings Lin back to the Big Apple, where he was a seldom-used reserve with the New York Knicks in 2012 when injuries to several starters gave him a chance to play. He sparked the Knicks to seven straight wins as “Linsanity” gripped Knicks fans.

He spent the next two seasons with Houston and one with the Los Angeles Lakers before joining Charlotte.    [SOURCE]

Despite pain, Kung top Taiwanese after day 2 of Fubon LPGA event

Taipei, Oct. 7 (CNA) Taiwan’s Candie Kung (龔怡萍) fought a pinched nerve and rainy and windy weather to shoot a 2-under-par 70 Friday in the second round of the Fubon LPGA Taiwan Championship in Linkou and finish the day in the best position of any of the 20 Taiwanese in the event.

Kung was tied for 10th at 2-under 142 with seven other golfers, four shots behind second round leaders Jang Ha Na and Park Hee Young of South Korea.

The only other Taiwanese golfer to be under par after two rounds was Tsai Pei-ying (蔡佩穎), who was tied for 18th at 1-under after a late-round collapse.

Tsai was near the top of the leaderboard at 5-under for the tournament after sinking a birdie on the par-four 13th, only to give away four shots with bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes and a double-bogey on the tricky par-5 18th.     [FULL  STORY]
