Henderson, Paula Creamer and Amy Yang in the LPGA Taiwan Championship yesterday.

Yokomine eagled the par-five 12th and had three back-nine birdies at windy Miramar before dropping the stroke on the par-five 18th in the second of six events on the tour’s Asian Swing. The 30-year-old Japanese player is winless in two seasons on the LPGA Tour after winning 23 times on the Japan LPGA Tour.

Henderson birdied three of the final four holes, playing in the last group of the day. The 19-year-old Canadian has two victories this year, winning the major KPMG Women’s PGA in June.

Creamer had a bogey-free round. Yang was six-under through 13 holes, then bogeyed the next two.

Jang Ha-na, Ai Miyazato, Lee-Anne Pace, Beatriz Recari and Park Hee-young shot 69s.

Defending champion Lydia Ko had a double bogey on the par-four fifth in a 70. The top-ranked New Zealander won by nine strokes at Miramar last year. She has four LPGA Tour victories this season.

Leading among Taiwanese were Tsai Pei-ying and amateur Chang Ya-chun, who shot one-under 71s for a share of 14th.     [FULL  STORY]

2-under-par 70 Friday in the second round of the Fubon LPGA Taiwan Championship in Linkou and finish the day in the best position of any of the 20 Taiwanese in the event.

Kung was tied for 10th at 2-under 142 with seven other golfers, four shots behind second round leaders Jang Ha Na and Park Hee Young of South Korea.

The only other Taiwanese golfer to be under par after two rounds was Tsai Pei-ying (蔡佩穎), who was tied for 18th at 1-under after a late-round collapse.

Tsai was near the top of the leaderboard at 5-under for the tournament after sinking a birdie on the par-four 13th, only to give away four shots with bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes and a double-bogey on the tricky par-5 18th.

The steady rain that fell throughout the day made conditions tough for all of the players on Friday, and only 25 players in the 80-player field finished the day with two-round totals of par or better in the US$2 million tournament at the Miramar Golf Country Club in Linkou.     [FULL  STORY]

CPBL boss blames Sports Administration for withdrawal

TAIPEI, Taiwan — The head of Taiwan’s professional baseball league on Monday said that “poor coordination” by the Sports Administration had resulted in its decision to withdraw Taiwan’s team from the 2017 World Baseball Classic (WBC).

CPBL Commissioner John Wu (吳志揚) told local media that the Sports Administration had sufficient time to negotiate between the CPBL and Taiwan’s Chinese Taipei Baseball Association (CTBA).

According to Wu, the Sports Administration showed “no respect” to the CPBL when it selected the national team’s manager without first consulting the league.

The “extremely poor coordination effort” forced the league to hold an emergency meeting with four CPBL teams on Sunday, Wu said.

During the meeting, the league decided to withdraw its previous offer to provide assistance to members of the national team, including draftee selection, training, and holding practice matches in preparation of next year’s 16-team tournament, he said.     [FULL  STORY]

Golfer Lu Wei-chih wins four years after brain surgery

Lu Wei-chih won for the first time since surgery four years ago to remove a brain tumor, taking his home Mercuries Taiwan Masters for the third time yesterday at the windy Taiwan Golf and Country Club.

The 37-year-old Lu closed with a 2-under 70 to finish at 5-under 283, a stroke ahead of Miguel Tabuena of the Philippines. Lu has four Asian Tour victories, also winning on his home course in 2005 and 2011.

“It means a lot to me to win this tournament. After the surgery, I thought I couldn’t play golf anymore so to be a winner again is amazing,” Lu said. “After the surgery I took things slowly. I started step by step. Can you imagine, after the surgery, the doctor said I couldn’t even sneeze, so I took things slow. I started by hitting 100 balls and after that, I blanked out. It was so tiring. At that time I thought I couldn’t play golf anymore.

“But my family pushed me. My wife, my father and my mother kept pushing me and kept motivating me to keep fighting. I’m here today because of them. The victory is for them as well. I’m blessed to have them in my life.”     [FULL  STORY]

Chan sisters advance in Wuhan

Taiwan’s Chan sisters survived a roller-coaster day at the WTA Tour’s Wuhan Open yesterday to advance to the semi-finals of the doubles, while Lu Yen-hsun failed with his comeback bid and exited the ATP Tour’s Chengdu Open in the second round.

Second seeds Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan were a set down and facing a break point when their second-round match against Slovenian duo Andreja Klepac and Katarina Srebotnik was suspended due to rain on Wednesday, but they fought back yesterday to complete a 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 victory in 1 hour, 31 minutes.

The sisters saved five of 10 break points and converted four of six to set up a quarter-final against familiar adversaries Raquel Atawo and Abigail Spears later in the day.

The second seeds carried on their good form to win the first set against the American duo, before it all fell apart as the sisters suffered muscle cramps and called the doctor, before losing the second to love.     [FULL  STORY]
