World No. 72 Hsieh raced to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over world No. 81 Naomi Broady in just 53 minutes to improve her career record to 2-0 against the Briton after winning their only previous encounter in Nottingham in 2012.

The Taiwanese saved both break points she faced and converted five of six, winning 52 of the 82 points contested to advance to a second-round clash yesterday against Alison Riske of the US.

“She has got a lot of confidence at the moment, I didn’t serve my best,” Broady told the Daily Mail. “It was my first match on grass, and my first game on clay ended in a similar scoreline and it got better after that. I can’t take a lot from it, there aren’t any positives to take from the game going forward, I just have to brush it off and get back on the practice courts.”     [FULL  STORY]

well as his legendary boxing battles following his death on Friday at age 74.

“We lost a giant today,” Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao said. “Boxing benefitted from Muhammad Ali’s talents, but not as much as mankind benefitted from his humanity.”

The front-page headline on Ali’s hometown newspaper, the Courier-Journal of Louisville, Kentucky, simply said, “The Greatest” with a photo of Ali in the ring.

Ali spoke out for African-American civil rights in the 1960s, carrying on his fight against injustice and sacrificing the prime years of his own career in the process.

The Chan sisters crashed out of the rain-delayed quarter-finals of the women’s doubles at the French Open yesterday, leaving Taiwanese hopes at the second Grand Slam of the year resting with the mixed doubles competition.

Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan lost the first set 6-1 on Tuesday, but were leading 2-1 and serving in the second set against Russian seventh seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina when rain suspended play for the day at Roland Garros.

However, the third seeds lost their break advantage immediately after the match resumed on Court 3 yesterday, eventually falling to a 6-1, 6-3 defeat.

The Russian duo saved one of two break points and converted five of 14, winning 71 of the 118 points contested to advance to a semi-final against unseeded Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova, who defeated sixth-seeded fellow Czechs Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hraddecka 6-3, 7-6 (11/9) in their quarter-final after having stunned top seeds Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza in the third round.     [FULL  STORY]

successful 2017 Summer Universiade and that if he fails, he will assume political responsibility.

Asked by several city councilors about the progress the city government has made in preparations for the World University Games during a question-and-answer session at the city council, Ko said he is duty bound to host the event successfully.

“If I do not succeed, I should perform seppuku,” Ko said. Seppuku or harakiri is a highly ritualized form of suicide that involves self-disembowelment.

The city government won the right in 2011 to host the 2017 Summer Universiade, an international sporting and cultural festival that is staged every two years in a different city. It is regarded as second only to the Olympic Games. The Summer Universiade consists of 11 compulsory sports, with 14 compulsory disciplines and up to three optional sports chosen by the host country.     [FULL  STORY]

consumer markets and work as hard as Kobe Bryant.

Hans Tung, a managing partner at GGV Capital, knows about unicorns – startups valued at more than US$1 billion. He was an early-stage investor in China’s Xiaomi and Alibaba, to name just two firms.

Speaking in Taipei this afternoon, Tung said most of the 84 unicorns produced in the U.S. to date, “especially the bigger ones,” sell consumer-focused products in countries around the world.

“They don’t focus on the U.S. market anymore,” he says. “They tend to be much more global.”

Tung grew up in Taiwan, moved to the U.S. at 13, went on to study at Stanford University and now ranks 21st in the Forbes Midas list for tech investors.     [FULL  STORY]
