Gilas faces TNT; NZ meets Taiwan

Tempo
Date: Sep. 11, 2015

Gilas Pilipinas grabs whatever little time is left to fine-tune its machine for the Olympic qualifying FIBA Asia Championship when it wraps up training today with the three-country, four-team Master Game Face MVP Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Wellington Saints of New Zealand and Chinese-Taipei debut at 4:15 p.m, while Gilas Pilipinas takes on Talk ‘N Text and its prized rookies Moala Tautuaa and Troy Rosario at 7 p.m.

Pruned down to a final 12 a few days ago, Gilas will shoot for a berth in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro against the region’s powerhouses, including defending champion Iran, longtime nemesis South Korea and host China, in Changsha.

The Tropang Texters offered their services in the MVP Cup after Lebanon, which earlier confirmed its participation, withdrew at the last minute with nary a justifiable explanation, upsetting all pre-tournament preparations.

Talk ‘N Text then face the Taiwanese tomorrow at 3 p.m., while New Zealand battles the Philippines at 5 p.m. Final day matches on Sunday feature the Kiwis against the Tropang Texters at 3 and the Taiwanese against Gilas at 5 p.m.  The FIBA Asia Championship is set from Sept. 23 to Oct. 3.     [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI — Taiwanese badminton aces Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) and Chou Tien-chen (周天成) advanced to the semifinals of their respective singles events at the Yonex Open Japan on Friday.

Entering the match, Tai had a 3-2 advantage in head-to-head play against Wang, according to the Badminton World Federation website, but there was little to separate the players in the first two games.

It was not until early in the third game, when Tai ran off five straight points at 4-4, that she gained a clear edge over her Chinese opponent and never looked back.

Needing a win to remain in contention, Taiwan head coach Chen Kuei-jen said he has made some adjustments to the starting lineup and team formation to face Vietnam, after a 5-1 thrashing by Iraq on Thursday last week.

“We will have a different look from the last match. Our players have been in training and preparing to go all out, so we can get a win for our home fans,” Chen said at a media briefing yesterday.

Chen said that it is vital the defense keep everything tight at the back.

“We have watched Vietnam’s match against Thailand. We know that Vietnam’s players are younger than ours and they have a very good defense,” he said.     [FULL  STORY]

Mike McClendon tossed seven innings of four-run ball and Chou Si-chi homered for the second time in seven days as the Chinatrust Brothers toppled the EDA Rhinos 9-6 at Kaohsiung’s Cheng Ching Lake Baseball Stadium last night to avoid a three-game sweep on the road.

Three second-inning runs by the visitors quickly erased a 0-1 deficit in the first, with Hsu Chi-hung and Chang Chih-hao knocking in a run each on top of a wild pitch by EDA starter Gaby Hernandez that scored the runner from third.

The Brothers doubled their run total with three more in the third when Chou led off the inning with a solo blast off Hernandez before Chen Chia-chui and Pan Ting-hsiang singled in a run each to give Chinatrust a 6-2 lead.     [FULL  STORY]
