Taiwan take on South Korea tonight on the opening day of the Asian Baseball Championship at Taichung’s Intercontinental Stadium.

Tournament favorites Japan play China at 12:30pm at the same venue, while Indonesia and Pakistan are to face off at the National Taiwan University of Sport’s ballpark in downtown Taichung at 12:30pm.

It is the 27th edition of the tournament organized by the Baseball Federation of Asia (BFA), in which all teams begin by playing a round-robin format.

After their opening fixture, Taiwan are to take on Indonesia, China, Pakistan and Japan.

All round-robin fixtures are to be completed by Sunday.

The two teams with the best record are to play each other for the championship crown, with no playoff games to be played.

Taiwan captain Kuo Lee Chien-fu said he and the players want to win the title in front of home fans in Taichung.

“Everyone must stay sharp, focus on the game and not let pressure get to them. We know the key games are against South Korea and Japan,” Kuo Lee said at a news conference yesterday.     [FULL  STORY]

Medellin, Colombia on Saturday with a dramatic victory over a somewhat diminished but still powerful South Korean team.

Seeded second after qualifying, the Taiwanese team of Tan Ya-ting, Le Chien-ying and Hsiung Mei-chien won close encounters over India and Mexico in earlier rounds to reach the final against the perennial powerhouse in the sport.

Taiwan would not face the top Korean archers because the country’s official national archery team was in Rio de Janeiro to prepare for an Olympic test event, but two of the members on the Korean team in the Medellin final were still good enough to finish first and second in the women’s individual event.

Taiwan lost the first set 57-55 (with each set consisting of six arrows with a maximum score of 10 per shot) but rebounded to take the next two sets, 55-53 and 56-53, to take a 4-2 lead heading into the decisive set of the first-to-five-points match.     [FULL  STORY]

Lu fired a 1-under 71 — one of only four under-par rounds carded by the 61-player field on Sunday — to give her a four-round score of 7-under 281 for a two-shot victory over Miki Sakai and Momoko Ueda of Japan.

“The last day is always difficult, and today the course was playing tough, and it put a lot of pressure on the players,” she said. “I knew that if I could make pars, I would have a shot (at winning).”

And that she did, making 12 pars in her first 13 holes along with a birdie on the par-5 ninth. But her round started to get interesting at the par-4 14th.     [FULL  STORY]

at the US$3.25 million Evian Championship in France on Friday, but they failed to make moves up the leaderboard on Saturday.

Lee Min (李旻), Candie Kung (龔怡萍), and Hsu Wei-ling (徐薇淩), who play regularly on the U.S. LPGA Tour, and Cheng Ssu-chia (程思嘉), a regular on the European Ladies Tour, all made the cut after the second round, with Lee and Kung tied for 23rd at even par.

On Saturday, Kung shot an even-par 71 to remain at even par for the tournament, but with many players in the top half of the leaderboard shooting subpar rounds, she fell back in the standings and was temporarily tied for 29th with several players still on the course.

The often inconsistent Lee had a wild ride in the third round with an eagle, four birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey to card a 1-over-par 72, pushing her out of the top 30.

Cheng, who started the day tied for 57th at 4 over par, started disastrously with a double bogey on the par-4 first hole.     [FULL  STORY]

The 27-year-old Taiwanese hoped to continue her luck after a bogey-free 67 on Friday, but could only manage four birdies and two bogeys on the day.

Ueda’s name at the top of the leaderboard was the day’s surprise. She shot a stunning 8-under 64 Saturday that including an eagle on the par-5 ninth and four consecutive birdies to finish the round.     [FULL  STORY]

edging their foes in a 5-4 thriller at the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium last night to even the weekend series at one win apiece.

Chen Hung-wen came out of the bullpen with two outs and the tying run on base in the top of the eighth for the Brothers — after the Rhinos had scored three straight to make it 5-4 — and struck out the next batter he faced to end the Rhinos’ scoring threat.

He followed that up with a brilliant one-two-three ninth to preserve the win for the league leaders.

“It was a big win for us, especially with a hot team like [the Rhinos]; [Chen] really bailed us out in the end,” Brothers manager Wu Fu-lien said after the game.

His troops needed a big outing from Chen and got just that from the ace closer to avenge Friday night’s 17-1 loss.     [FULL  STORY]
