as they battled into the final of the Toray Pan Pacific Open, in which they could face fellow Taiwanese Chuang Chia-jung.

Second seeds Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan edged Japanese duo Eri Hozumi and Miyu Kato 6-4, 7-5 in 1 hour, 31 minutes in their semi-final at the Ariake Coliseum in the Japanese capital.

The Taiwanese sisters saved nine of 12 break points and converted five of 12, winning 72 of the 133 points contested to make a second final in eight days following their victory in the Japan Open on Saturday last week.

In the second semi-final, Chuang and Kateryna Bondarenko were leading third-seeded Spanish duo Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3, 3-3 as of press time last night.     [FULL  STORY]

The Chan sisters survived another second-set wobble to advance to the semi-finals of the doubles at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo yesterday, while fellow Taiwanese Chuang Chia-jung avenged her doubles defeat to Japanese duo Misaki Doi and Nara Kurumi in the semi-finals of the Japan Open last week.

Second seeds Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan saved one of two break points and converted three of four to claim the first set of their semi-final 6-1, but then conceded three breaks and converted just one of four as Olga Savchuk and Xu Yifan rallied to win the second set 6-2.

The Chan sisters then fought back to claim the super tiebreak 10-8 against their Ukrainian-Chinese opponents in 1 hour, 11 minutes, the second straight match in which they were taken to the brink after comprehensively winning the first set.     [FULL  STORY]

Sun Moon Lake takes lead among top 10 cycle paths

Taipei, Sept. 22 (CNA) More than 700,000 enthusiasts have cast their votes for the top 10 201509220035t0001cycle paths in Taiwan since the Sports Administration launched the poll Aug. 13, and eight days before the close of voting, the Sun Moon Lake path in central Taiwan is in the lead.

Leisure cycling is very popular in Taiwan and local governments around the island have developed many cycle paths with convenient accessibility, where riders can appreciate magnificent scenery along the route.

The combined length of the cycle paths in Taiwan is estimated at 4,500 kilometers, and a network connecting all these paths will be completed by the end of this year, according to the Tourism Bureau.

The Sports Administration has selected 32 routes, featuring mountains, lakes, rivers, coastlines, pastoral scenery and urban landscapes. On the event website (http://www.top10cycling.tw), there are introductions to the 32 routes, and voters can choose their 10 most favored routes.     [FULL  STORY]

The Chan sisters kept their bid for back-to-back doubles titles on track in the Japanese capital yesterday, despite having to survive a second-set meltdown at the Toray Pan Pacific Open.

Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan cruised to a 6-1, 4-0 lead in their first-round match against Anna-Lena Groenefeld and CoCo Vandeweghe, but then lost six straight matches as their German-American opponents forced a super tiebreak.

However, the Taiwanese second seeds battled to a 10-7 victory in the decider at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, where they won the Japan Open doubles final on Saturday, their third WTA Tour title of the season.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s bid for Davis Cup promotion ends in failure

Taiwan’s bid for promotion back to Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group I on Sunday ended in failure at the Ulusal Tenis Egitim Merkezi Tennis Club in Izmir, Turkey, as Pakistan claimed a 3-2 victory to advance.

Wang Chieh-fu, who was standing in for Jimmy Wang, leveled the match at 2-2 by coming from a set down to win a thrilling first reverse singles rubber 6-7 (2/7), 6-2, 7-6 (7/5), 1-6, 6-3 over Pakistan’s Aqeel Khan.

Wang hit 20 aces and converted three of seven break points, completing the victory in 4 hours, 2 minutes.

However, Pakistan’s Aisam Qureshi gave his side the victory in the second reverse singles with a 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Hung Jui-chen in a match that lasted 3 hours, 56 minutes.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan beats Japan to place second in Asian Baseball Championship

Taipei, Sept. 20 (CNA) Taiwan was the runner-up in the 2015 Asian Baseball 201509200016t0001Championship after beating Japan 3-1 Sunday in its first win against the archrival in 14 years.

South Korea won the championship early after beating all of its five opponents in the six-nation tournament. Both Japan and Taiwan lost their game against South Korea in a single round-robin schedule.

In Sunday’s final game to decide the second-place team, Taiwan took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to two hits and two walks, only for the Japanese to make it even in the seventh, when relief pitcher Chen Pin-hsue allowed a run that began with a walk followed by a wild pitch and a hit.

Su Chih-chieh retook the lead for Taiwan in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer and the home team players added another run in the eighth after the bases were loaded.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwanese wins World 9-ball Championship

Taipei, Sept. 19 (CNA) Taiwanese pool player Ko Pin-yi (柯秉逸) won the World 9-ball 201509190020t0001Championship in Doha on Friday night, defeating American master of the break shot Shane Van Boening 13-11 in the final of the tournament.

In the race to the final’s 13 racks, both players scored brilliant shots under pressure, and made just a handful of errors.

The 26-year-old Taiwanese grabbed the first rack to go up 1-0 and the pair traded frames thereafter, with each holding serve until the score reached 5-5.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan fell behind 2-1 against Pakistan on the second day of their Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group II playoff at the Ulusal Tenis Egitim Merkezi Tennis Club in Izmir, Turkey, yesterday.

Taiwanese teens win Sun Moon Lake 5000-meter swimming races

Taipei, Sept. 19 (CNA) Taiwanese teenagers Cho Chen-chi (卓承齊) and Su Shi-han (蘇詩SONY DSC涵) won the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively, of the First Sun Moon Lake Open Water Swimming Contest on Sunday.

Su, 19, set a record, winning the women’s division of the 5000-meter race in a time of 48 minutes, 16 seconds.

Cho, a 16-year-old high school student from Taipei, finished first in the men’s event over the same distance in a time of 45:45.

A regular swimmer since he was seven, Cho, won a gold medal in 2014 in the 1500-meter men’s free style competition at the Taiwan High School Games.

Since the Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Carnival was launched at the scenic freshwater lake in central Taiwan in 1983, an increasing number of contestants from home and abroad have been participating in the event, swimming 3,000 meters from Choawu Pier (朝霧) to Ita Thao Wharf Pier (伊達邵).     [FULL  STORY]

Japan Open in Tokyo yesterday as the Taiwanese duo claimed their third WTA Tour title of the year.

Top seeds Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan needed just 62 minutes to wrap up a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over Misaki Doi and Kurumi Nara on Court 1 at the Ariake Coliseum.

The victory was all the more special for younger sister Hao-ching, who was celebrating her 22nd birthday yesterday.

The Taiwanese sisters saved all four break points they faced and converted four of six, winning 54 of the 89 points contested.

It was their third doubles title this season following victories in Pattaya in February and in Cincinnati last month.

In the singles, Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium overpowered Ajla Tomljanovic 7-5, 6-2 yesterday to advance to the final of the Japan Open.     [FULL  STORY]
