nail-biting women’s doubles final at the China Open on Saturday night.

Sixth-seeded Taiwanese sisters Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan edged a tight first set, as they rallied from 5-2 down in the tiebreak — fighting off two set points — to take the set 7-6 (11/9) in 67 minutes.

However, the Swiss-Indian duo then upped their game, winning 14 points in a row to take the second set 6-1 in just 25 minutes and they clinched the victory 10-8 in the super tiebreak in a match lasting 1 hour, 40 minutes.     [FULL  STORY]

the bottom of 10th as the EDA Rhinos tamed the diehard Uni-President Lions 9-5 at the Cheng Ching Lake Baseball Stadium in Kaohsiung last night.

With the bases juiced, the Lions outfield drawn in and the fans on their feet in anticipation, the Rhinos captain crushed an offering from Lai that definitely caught too much of the plate, driving it into the right-center seats for the game-winning runs.

“It’s a great feeling to be able to hit one out, not to mention knocking in four to win,” Hu said after the game and being voted MVP.     [FULL  STORY]

keep on track their challenge for a fourth title of the season and confirm their spot at the WTA Finals in Singapore in two weeks.

Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan edged third seeds Casey Dellacqua of Australia and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-7 (5/7), 12-10 in 1 hour, 43 minutes at the National Tennis Stadium in Beijing.

The sixth-seeded Taiwanese sisters saved six of 10 break points and converted five of 11, winning 84 of the 159 points contested to set up a final against familiar foes Martina Hingis of Switzerland and Sania Mirza of India, the top seeds.

The semi-final victory ensured that the Chan sisters became the seventh pairing to claim their spot at the season-ending WTA Finals on Oct. 25, their first appearance as a partnership, although Chan Yung-jan has qualified before, in 2007 in Madrid with fellow Taiwanese Chuang Chia-jung.     [FULL  STORY]

Tseng was tied with Inbee Park of South Korea and Alison Lee of the United States at 8-under 134, two shots behind the leader Ha Na Jang of South Korea and one behind Lin Xiyu of China.

On a day full of low scores Friday, the former world No. 1 bogeyed two of her first three holes, when by her own account her tempo was a little off, but recovered with birdies on the sixth, eighth and 12th holes to get back in the hunt before bogeying the par-4 14th.     [FULL  STORY]

opening round lead with countryman Hung Chun-kang Thursday at the $500,000 Yeangder Tournament Players Championship.

One shot behind were Miguel Tabuena of the Philippines, who finished second last year, Shaun Norris of South Africa, Panuphol Pittayarat of Thailand and India’s Khalin Joshi after the first round of the tournament held at the Linkou International Golf and Country Club near the capital Taipei.

Tied for third place were Chinese Taipei duo Hung Chien-yao and veteran Lu Wen-teh.

The 42-year-old Lin, six-time Asian Tour winner who is on a quest for his first title of the year, credited his health and fitness training.

“I haven’t played much on the Asian Tour because I used to get tired very easily when I travel too often. Now I’ve been going to the gym for half a year and it has helped a lot. I’m 42 this year so I can’t keep playing and travelling,” said Lin.     [FULL  STORY]

Uni-President Lions beat EDA Rhinos

Taipei Times

Lin Chih-hsiang’s soft grounder back to the pitcher that was ruled a single by the instant replay scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth as the Uni-President Lions plated three unanswered runs to rally past the red-hot EDA Rhinos 3-2 at the Cheng Ching Lake Baseball Stadium in Kaohsiung last night.

It was a play close enough to involve the instant replay as an out would have stranded all three Lions runners to end the inning. However, fortunately for the slumping Cats, losers of three straight and seven of their last 10 heading into the contest, it was a break they had been looking for to secure a victory.

The Lions’ starter pitched into and out of trouble on several occasions to keep the Rhinos offense to only two runs, despite giving up 10 hits over seven innings.     [FULL  STORY]
