Hsieh and Federer make semis, Osaka falls short

Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei on Thursday advanced to the semi-finals of the women’s doubles at the Madrid Open, while Roger Federer had to save two match points to defeat Gael Monfils and reach the quarter-finals of the men’s singles.

Fifth seeds Hsieh and Barbora Strycova took just 63 minutes to see off the challenge of third seeds Samantha Stosur of Australia and Zhang Shuai of China 6-2, 6-4.

The Taiwanese-Czech duo saved five of seven break points and converted five of nine, winning 71 percent of their first-serve points and 60 of the 100 points contested to advance to the semi-finals.

The fifth seeds were due to face Veronika Kudermetova of Russia and Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan, after the unseeded duo ousted eighth seeds Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany and Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands 6-4, 6-3 in 58 minutes.

Fifth seeds Hsieh and Barbora Strycova defeated Jennifer Brady of the US and Jessica Moore of Australia 6-3, 7-6 (7/2) in 1 hour, 25 minutes at La Caja Magica in the Spanish capital.

The Taiwanese-Czech duo saved six of eight break points and converted four of eight, winning 42 percent of their points on return to advance to a quarter-final against the winners of yesterday’s second-round clash that pitted Spanish duo Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Sara Sorribes Tormo against third seeds Samantha Stosur of Australia and Zhang Shuai of China.

Madrid Open, but fellow Taiwanese the Chan sisters fell to an upset loss at La Caga Magica in the Spanish capital.

Fifth seeds Hsieh and Barbora Strycova rallied from a set down to defeat Andreea Mitu of Romania and Alexandra Panova of Russia 3-6, 6-4, 10-3 in 1 hour, 12 minutes.

The Taiwanese-Czech duo failed to save any of the three break points they faced, but converted both break points they created, winning 57 percent of points on their second serve to advance to a second-round clash against Jennifer Brady of the US and Jessica Moore of Australia, who defeated Desirae Krawczyk of the US and Makoto Ninomiya of Japan 7-5, 6-2.

Hsieh battles back for victory in Morocco

Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei on Wednesday fought back from a set and a double break down to advance to her fourth WTA Tour quarter-final of the season at the Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem in Rabat, Morocco.

Second seed Hsieh fought back to record a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena in 1 hour, 58 minutes, her fifth straight victory over the world No. 110.

World No. 24 Hsieh saved 10 of 15 break points and converted six of seven to advance to a quarter-final against British seventh seed Johanna Konta, who defeated Ana Bogdan of Romania 6-1, 6-7 (6/8), 6-2 in 1 hour, 59 minutes.

“On clay, it can be pretty good, it can be pretty bad. I know I can suddenly get the feeling and I can feel really comfortable on the court,” Hsieh told the WTA Web site.

Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings in the women’s singles category for a record 125 weeks, the latest list showed Tuesday.

Tai has now made history, breaking the record held by Chinese female shuttler Li Xuerui, who was No. 1 in the BWF’s world rankings for 124 weeks.

Earlier this month, Tai won her first title of the season at the Malaysia Open in Kuala Lumpur, defending the championship for the third consecutive year.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — 1.660 seconds. That’s how fast Junior high school student Lin Jui-an (林芮安) beat other competitors at the World Sport Stacking Championship this year.

13-year-old Lin competed Sunday (April 28) in Mollina, Spain, and won the Female Individual 3-3-3 championship in 13-14 age division at this year’s World Sport Stacking Championships, according to Liberty Times.

According to the WSSA rule book, the 3-3-3 stack requires competitors to “up stack” and “down stack” the cups from left to right or right to left in three stacks made up of three cups in each stack.

Lin only took 1.660 seconds to complete the routine and set herself apart from the runner-up, Sae Ryung Park from South Korea, making her the fastest in the division this year.

Visually impaired Taiwanese athlete completes London Marathon

London, April 28 (CNA) Hung Kuo-chan (洪國展) became the first visually impaired runner from Taiwan to complete in the world-renowned London Marathon on Sunday.

It was Hung’s second time participating in a major international marathon following his run at the Boston Marathon in April last year.

The 39-year-old Hung gained entry to compete in the marathon via its “Charity Entry,” which entailed him making a donation of 2,000 pounds (US$2,589) to the Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB) that he raised by giving speeches and organizing fundraisers.

According to the London Marathon webpage, most major charities have a set number of entry places for the marathon, which they allocate to runners on the basis that they will raise an agreed amount of money for the charity.    [FULL  STORY]

Indonesia surprise Iran at Taoyuan futsal tournament

Indonesia surprised Iran yesterday, the last day of the invitaitonal Under-20 futsal tournament at the Taoyuan Arena, scoring three goals in the first half and prevailing 3-1, after Taiwan on Saturday also fell to the Southeast Asian side.

Muhammad Syalfullah got Indonesia started against Iran with a run from the right wing, firing home inside 1 minute after the opening kick-off.

In the 16th minute, Mohammad Rizky doubled the lead and Ari Ramdani added another before the break.

Iran fought back with a goal by Sarbaz Sajjad in the second half and poured onto the attack looking for a way back, but Indonesia’s solid defense thwarted them.

Shahrdari Varamin win volleyball title, Taichung Bank sixth

Shahrdari Varamin of Iran on Friday claimed the Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship, defeating the Panasonic Panthers of Japan in a five-set thriller 25-20, 25-16, 22-25, 20-25, 14-16, while Taichung Bank finished sixth.

Fayazi Damnani Purya registered 19 points and had two blocks for Shahrdari Varamin, while teammate Razipoor Mohammad contributed 16 points to their comeback win at the Tianmu Sports Center in Taipei.

Michal Kubiak was outstanding for the Panthers, with the Poland player chalking up 20 points, including 17 kills from 38 attempts as the Panthers went up two sets to nil.

However, the Iran club roared back to win the next two sets and set up the decider. The Panthers hit a return that went out of bounds on the match-winning point, sparking jubilation among the victors.    [FULL  STORY]
