Taipei, March 11 (CNA) Taiwanese tennis player Wu Tung-lin (吳東霖) lost to Hugo Dellien of Bolivia in the final of the men’s singles at the ATP Santiago Challenger in Chile on Sunday.

In his first Challenger final, Wu, 20, was overpowered by World No. 87 Dellien, 7-5, 6-7 (1) and 1-6.

The previous day, Wu upset Pablo Andujar-Alba of Spain, the top seed of the ATP Challenger 80 clay-court event, scoring a win for the first time against a player ranked among the world’s top 100.

Indian Wells, California, while in the women’s singles world No. 2 Simona Halep survived a tough challenge from Ukrainian qualifier Kateryna Kozlova.

Third seeds Hsieh and Barbora Strycova took just 52 minutes to cruise to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Dalila Jakupovic of Slovenia and Irina Khromacheva of Russia in the second round of the women’s doubles.

The Taiwanese-Czech duo did not face a single break point and converted five of eight, winning 50 of the 77 points contested to set up a quarter-final clash with Taiwanese eighth seeds Chan Hao-ching and Latisha Chan.

The Chan sisters had a slightly tougher time seeing of the challenge of Ukrainian sisters Lyudmyla and Nadiia Kichenok 6-3, 6-4 in 72 minutes.    [FULL  STORY]

The victory propelled the Dreamers to a 17-6 record, threatening league-leader Alab, which slipped to 18-5 and wound up just a full game ahead with still two matches left to play in the regular season.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s Fu Shu-ping (傅淑萍) successfully defended her title in the 2019 Taipei Expressway Marathon (台北國道馬拉松) on Sunday, finishing in two hours, 52 minutes, and 14 seconds in the women’s event, Central News Agency (CNA) reported on the same day.

The title of the men’s event was won by Kenyan runner Chirchir Jackson Kiprotich for the third time in a row, CNA reported. He clocked two hours, 31 minutes, and 31 seconds.

This year’s Taipei Expressway Marathon attracted a total of 8,040 runners from 31 countries, including participants in the elite marathon, half marathon, and 10-kilometer categories.    [FULL  STORY]

in February by fans, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) posted on its official website March 9.

WTA commended Hsieh for “reaching the biggest semifinal of her career in Dubai, as she scored a series of impressive victories in the singles draw, and later won the doubles title alongside Barbora Strycova.”

Five players are selected by wtatennis.com every month and the winner is then determined by fan voting, according to WTA.

“It’s always good to see more different styles of play on the tour because they give more fun. When we play against them, we feel more fun,” Hsieh said in an interview posted on the website.    [FULL  STORY]

recently ranked number one by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) in the welterweight category (69 kg), with a score of 1357.5 points.

A member of the indigenous Amis tribe, the Hualien-born athlete has been hailed by local media as the “Ami bellona” and “boxing queen.”

She excelled throughout 2018, winning the gold medal at the Ulaanbaatar Box Cup, World University Boxing Championship, and the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.

Chen said she took part in many women’s boxing competitions with her coach last year.

The world No. 1 Taiwanese next faces the winner of the second semifinal between Chen Yufei (陳雨菲) of China and Nozomi Okuhara of Japan on Sunday.

Tai defeated American Beiwen Zhang (張蓓雯), the world’s No. 12, 21-15, 21-14 in the round of 16 to advance to the round of eight following her victory in the round of 32 the previous day.

Although Tai was trailing Zhang shortly after the game started, Tai recovered quickly and closed the gap, then went on to soar past her competitor in the 30-minute game.

Taiwan’s Hsieh into Indian Wells women’s doubles second round

Taipei, March 8 (CNA) Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) and doubles partner Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic advanced to the second round of the BNP Paribas Open women’s doubles in California on Thursday.

In their first event since taking the doubles title in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in late February, Hsieh and Strycova got past the tough pairing of German Julia Goerges and Czech Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (6).

Both sides struggled to hold serve in the first set but the third-seeded Taiwan/Czech duo held serve to clinch the set after breaking their opponents in the ninth game.

They never gained traction in the second set but recovered in time to take the super tiebreaker.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — On March 3, a man drowned while competing in the swimming phase of the Kaohsiung Aihe International Ironman Triathlon, but it was not until family members started seeking help from the public on social media that organizers finally announced the death today.

While competing in the 1,500-meter swimming segment of the “2019 13th Annual WHISBIH Kaohsiung Aihe International Ironman Triathlon,” a 45-year-old competitor surnamed Chang (張), suddenly collapsed. Chang had been swimming for less than 30 minutes and had neared the 700-meter turning point, when he suddenly had an “abnormal condition.”

Search and rescue officers of the Naval Rescue Brigade floating side-by-side with the swimmers quickly navigated toward Chang to rescue him. He was placed in a lifeboat and was rushed to the starting line, where he suffered an Out-of-hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA).

Paramedics immediately rushed him to a hospital, where he was soon declared dead.  [FULL  STORY]
