TAIPEI (Taiwan News)—The 2018 Waimushan (外木山) sea swimming race in Taiwan’s

northern port city of Keelung will take place on June 10, and registration for the race is open from now to May 4, the organizer of the event, Keelung City Government, announced on Tuesday.

The annual sea swimming event had been held consecutively for 11 years until last year when it was canceled due to the impact of heavy rains.

The swim will start from Hai Xing Pool (海興游泳池) and end at the Dawulun Beach (大武崙海灘), covering a total distance of 3,200 meters.

Keelung City Government said only groups of three or more people and online registration will be accepted and that only people older than 10 years are eligible to participate. The registration fee is NT$600 (US$20) each, the organizer added.    [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI(Taiwan News)- The highest level track and field event in Taiwan, the Taiwan

Athletics Open will be held at Taipei Municipal Stadium on May 25 and 26.

Taiwanese athletes, including 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade gold medalist for the Men’s 100m dash- Yang Chun-han(楊俊瀚), the Men’s 400m Hurdles silver medalist Chen Chieh(陳傑), and the Asian record holder for Men’s Javelin Throw Cheng Chao-tsun(鄭兆村) will be participating in the upcoming Taiwan Athletics Open.

At the press conference held on April 19, both Yang and Chen welcomed everyone to the stadium to support the Taiwanese athletes participating in the Taiwan Athletics Open this year.

The Taiwan Athletics Open will be a warm-up event to prepare for the Asian Games that will be held in Jakarta in August this year. The Taiwan Athletic Open also provides a chance for other athletes to meet the qualifying criteria for the Asian Games.

Huang (黃偵玲) is preparing to face Gina “Conviction” Iniong of the Philippines on April 20 in Manila as part of the ONE: HEROES OF HONOR event, the largest mixed-martial arts event in Asia.

Huang is hoping to impress the international crowds with her combat prowess at the ONE: HEROES OF HONOR event, to be held at the Mall of Asia Arena this Friday against Iniong of the Philippines’ Team Lakay.

The upcoming Asian Games 2018 will be held held in Jakarta at the end of August

TAIPEI(Taiwan News)-  In preparation for the upcoming Asian Games 2018, which will be

held in Jakarta at the end of August, the Sports Administration Ministry of Education(體育署) and the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee (中華奧會) are sending a small team of officials to Jakarta ahead of the game to inspect the competition venues.

On the first day of the on-site check, the officials were informed that several venues in Jakarta are expected to complete construction between May and June.

On the other hand, the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (GBK Stadium), the venue for the Opening and Closing ceremony, is completed. However, as this will be the competition venue for soccer, it is still closed for maintenance.  The GBK Stadium, with a seating capacity of 72,000, is equipped with a warm-up field for athletes participating in the Athletics events.     [FULL  STORY]

TAIPEI(Taiwan News)- Brooklyn Nets owner, Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov sold a 49-percent stake in the Brooklyn Nets basketball team to Taiwanese billionaire Joe Tsai(蔡崇信).

Taiwanese descent Jeremy Lin(林書豪) plays for the Brooklyn Nets and he is one of the few Asian-Americans in NBA history, and the first American of Taiwanese descent to play in the league.

Prokhorov will continue to be the team’s controlling owner through Onexim Sports and Entertainment Holding, and the sale will not affect its day-to-day management and basketball operations.

According to the Associated Press, the deal signed between Prokhorov and Tsai allows the latter to acquire further shares in 2021. If exercised, he would be likely to become the controlling owner of the Brooklyn Nets in the near future. However, the sale between them does not include Barclays Center.

The Taiwan Football Premier League season begins this weekend, with Tatung in the

men’s league and Taichung Blue Whale in the women’s league seeking to retain their titles.

In the men’s league, a revamped schedule sees the season divided into three segments, with eight teams playing a total of 84 matches from this month until September.

Playoffs are to follow the regular season, with the winner taking the title and NT$700,000.

The runners-up are to receive NT$200,000 and third place NT$100,000.

“For Taiwan soccer to progress to the next level, we need to upgrade the league with better and more comprehensive management. Singapore, April 12 (CNA) Taiwan won three golds, two silvers and one bronze at the two-

day 80th Singapore Open Track & Field Championships 2018 which was held Wednesday and Thursday.

Taiwan’s Lee Kuei-lung (李奎龍) clinched the first gold for the country in the men’s Triple Jump Open Division on Wednesday with 15.98 meters while Liao Yan-jun (廖晏均) took silver in the women’s 100 Meter Dash Open Division in 11.78 seconds.

On Thursday, Lin You-tang (林昱堂) secured another gold for Taiwan in the men’s Long Jump Open Division with 7.71 meters, which also met the qualification standard for the 2018 Asian Games scheduled for August in Jakarta.

Wu Chia-ju (吳家如) took gold, on the same day, in the women’s Pole Vault Open Division by achieving 4.15 meters, breaking the national record of 4.10 meters, which had stood for 15 years, and also qualifying for this year’s Asian Games.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, April 11 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Wednesday issued a

warning to Taiwanese visitors to Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup this summer, saying they should be mindful of their safety.

In a statement, MOFA’s Bureau of Consular Affairs said Taiwan’s representative office in Moscow has established an emergency aid task force to assist Taiwanese during the World Cup in Russia if they encounter any problems.

The World Cup usually attracts large crowds of passionate soccer fans from all over the world and emotions sometimes run high, the bureau said, warning Taiwanese fans to steer clear of danger.

The bureau also suggested that Taiwanese fans buy their World Cup tickets early and make accommodation reservations, after which they can apply online for a fan ID that will allow multiple entries into Russia during the World Cup.    [FULL  STORY]
