Taipei, March 26 (CNA) The sun has finally shown its face after two weeks of rain, but 45206357temperatures around Taiwan will remain low, especially during the late night and early morning hours, until next Monday, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Saturday.

The bureau said the air mass currently lingering over Taiwan is colder than expected and has been upgraded from a “strong cold air mass” to a “cold surge.”

In the early hours of Saturday, low temperatures of 9-11 degrees Celsius were recorded in northern and central Taiwan and 13-15 degrees in southern and eastern Taiwan, according to the bureau.

The lowest temperature — 8.7 degrees — was seen in New Taipei’s coastal Tamsui District.

The CWB forecast that between Saturday and next Monday, overnight and early-morning temperatures will likely drop to below 10 degrees in open coastal areas in Yilan, regions north of Tainan, as well as the outlying counties of Kinmen and Matsu.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, March 1 (CNA) A strong continental cold air mass that arrived in Taiwan on Sunday 61326153sent temperatures lower around the country on Tuesday, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

The lowest temperature in a low-lying area on Taiwan proper as of 7 a.m. Tuesday was 10.9 degrees Celsius in Chiayi City, followed by 11.2 degrees in Tamsui in New Taipei and 11.4 degrees in Wuqi in Taichung, CWB data showed.

The mercury could drop to around 10 degrees in areas north of Chiayi and in coastal and open areas in Yilan County on Tuesday night, the bureau forecast.

Temperatures during the day will range from 12 to 20 degrees in the north, 14 to 19 degrees in the northeast, 14 to 23 degrees in central Taiwan, 16 to 19 degrees in the east, and 17 to 24 degrees in the south, according to the bureau.

The mercury will remain low on Wednesday and Thursday, with the difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures as much as 10 degrees around Taiwan in the following week because of radiative cooling effects, the bureau predicted.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Feb. 25 (CNA) The cold and damp weather over the past week is seen 62353853as one of the causes for a sharp increase of influenza-like illnesses in Taipei, the city’s Department of Health said Thursday.

As of Thursday, this week has seen parainfluenza cases increase dramatically to 7,600, up 4,600 over the 3,000 recorded last week, according to Chen Shao-ching (陳少卿), director of the department.

She attributed the sharp increase to the cold and damp weather, as well to the start of a new semester at elementary and middle schools last week.

Severe cases of flu in the city from Jan. 1 to Feb. 24 reached 65, a whopping increase of 50 cases from the same period of last year, according to her department’s statistics. Of the 65, three died.     [FULL  STORY]
