Taipei, Dec. 25 (CNA) With no sign of a cold surge set to arrive in Taiwan in the final days of the year, 2017 will be the first year in nearly two decades not to experience a cold surge for the entire year, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Monday.

A cold surge is said to have occurred when the lowest temperature in the Taipei metropolitan area falls to 10 degrees Celsius or lower, according to the CWB.

Cold surges in Taiwan usually arrive around New Year’s Day and tend to fall between Dec. 10 and Jan. 23 the next year, according to CWB forecaster Hsu Chung-yi (徐仲毅).

But no cold surges were recorded last winter (from late 2016 to early 2017), and none have been experienced so far this winter, Hsu said, meaning that 10 degree or lower temperatures in greater Taipei will have been absent for a full year for the first time since 2000.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, Dec. 4 (CNA) The northeast monsoon is expected to bring fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5) per cubic meter to Taiwan and impact air quality, starting Monday evening, according to the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA).

The impact is expected to last until about 6 a.m. Tuesday and be worst early morning in northern Taiwan, the EPA said, urging the public not to take any outdoor activity during that time.

Chang Shun-chin (張順欽), head of the EPA’s Department of Environmental Monitoring and Information Management, told the press that the highest concentration of PM2.5 will range from 80-90 micrograms per cubic meter for one hour early Tuesday morning in northern Taiwan.

Bad air quality will affect northern Taiwan first and then spread to central areas, with residents in southern Taiwan expected to be least impacted by the monsoon, Chang said.    [FULL  STORY]

A 756.907 kilometer (470.32 miles) portion of highway is currently undergoing repair. The stretch of highway runs through Yilan County (宜蘭縣) and Hualien County (花蓮縣).

Recent heavy precipitation has caused disruptions and landslides along the coastal highway.

Construction teams will first touch up road paint, particularly along the highway’s slopes and curves, and then repair the road as needed.

Highway access will be granted once every two hours beginning at 8 a.m. through 6 p.m., so at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. Authorities will allow cars to pass road blocks as they arrive on the hour but will not wait for stragglers.    [FULL  STORY]

He told CNA on Monday that the photos will be used to create a “rainbow clock” to prove to the Guinness World Records committee that the longest-lasting rainbow has taken place in Taiwan.

The team is on a mission to compile a world-class profile for the rainbow, Chou said, inviting the public to get involved in the campaign to help Taiwan become part of meteorological history.    [FULL  STORY]
