and forecast to become a moderate typhoon soon, is projected to make landfall in Taiwan in the afternoon of Wednesday (Sep. 13) and affect all of Taiwan on Thursday, according to the latest update released by Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau (CWB) on Monday afternoon.

CWB Forecaster Li Meng-syuan (李孟軒) said Typhoon Talim is currently centered some 1,510 kilometers east-southeast of Taiwan’s southernmost tip, Eluanbi, moving at a speed of 29 km per hour in a west-northwesterly direction. It’s packing maximum sustained wind of 108 kph and may be upgraded to a moderate typhoon on Monday night.

If the typhoon continues to travel according to the current speed and direction, it is expected to make landfall in Taiwan on Wednesday afternoon and bring rains all over Taiwan, Li said.    [FULL  STORY]

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) is expected to issue sea and land warnings for Taiwan on Tuesday and Wednesday as Tropical Storm Talim is bearing down on the nation.

According to the CWB, as of Sunday afternoon, Talim is around 2,300 km from Taiwan’s southernmost tip of Eluanbi and is moving 25 km/h west-northwest toward the Bashi Channel.

The storm will make landfall on southeastern Taiwan if it maintains its current course. The CWB also forecast Talim could strengthen into a typhoon by the time it reaches Taiwan.

The CWB also pointed out that Talim’s path could take a northern turn on Thursday or Friday due to the weakening of a Pacific high press system starting late Wednesday. If the storm veers north, it will brought more rain and wind to Taiwan for a longer period, the CWB said.    [SOURCE]

Taipei, Sept. 1 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau issued an extremely heavy to torrential rain advisory for Yilan County from late Friday through Sunday morning due to impact from this year’s 16th typhoon.

The CWB upgraded its earlier warning for Yilan due to the peripheral effects of Tropical Storm Mawar, noting that Keelung North Coast, New Taipei City’s mountainous area, Pingtung County including Hengchun Peninsula, Hualien and Taitung counties and their offshore islets could experience heavy or extremely heavy rain.    [FULL  STORY]

main island of Luzon is likely to turn into a tropical storm which is likely to influence the weather this weekend, even though it will not pass close to Taiwan, weather forecasters said.

The depression was moving at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour in a west-northwesterly direction and could be declared the 14th tropical storm of the season on Friday, experts said. It will bear the name Pakhar (帕卡), a type of fish which lives in the Mekong River in Laos.

The storm was likely to cross Luzon and head for China’s Guangdong Province, which was battered by the previous storm, Hato, earlier this week.

From Friday to Monday, the weather in Taiwan is likely to suffer from torrential rain, particularly in the south and on the east coast, even though the eye of the storm will come nowhere near the island, according to the Central Weather Bureau. Other parts of Taiwan could see the usual afternoon thunder showers.    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan until Saturday evening, the next tropical storm, Haitang (海棠), was already roaring toward the island, with land and sea alerts valid for two storms simultaneously for the first time in 50 years, the Central Weather Bureau said.

Until 3 p.m. Saturday, Haitang was just a tropical depression over the South China Sea, but at that time, it gained enough strength to be labeled the 10th tropical storm of this year’s typhoon season.

The new storm was so close to Taiwan that the weather bureau declared land and sea alerts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Haitang was being pulled up northward by Nesat, leading to the possibility of a Fujiwhara effect (藤原效應), where two cyclones or typhoons within 2,000 kilometers of each other orbit each other or even merge into one storm.    [FULL  STORY]

Train service was suspended, flights were disrupted, and highways and schools closed yesterday as the nation braced for its first typhoon of the year.

Typhoon Nesat — which strengthened into a moderate storm on Friday — was already bringing crashing waves and strong winds to the east coast earlier yesterday.

Nesat’s center made landfall at 7:10pm at Yilan County’s Suao Township (蘇澳), the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said, forecasting that the eye of the storm would leave the nation early this morning.

As of 8pm, Nesat had maximum sustained winds of 137kph, with gusts reaching 173kph, it added.    [FULL  STORY]

tropical storm to affect Taiwan this typhoon season might not do so after all, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Monday.

The bureau had said Sunday there was a possibility the weather system would develop into the ninth tropical storm of the season.

But the CWB said today that the latest data showed conditions were unfavorable for the system’s development.

The observation mirrors those from European and Japanese forecasters, though the U.S. weather station still believes there is a chance of the depression becoming a storm.    [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, July 19 (CNA) The temperature in Taipei set a new high for the year on Wednesday, when the mercury hit 38.0 degrees Celsius, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

The reading was recorded at 12:04 p.m., breaking the year’s previous record for Taipei of 36.8 degrees, set one day earlier. Neighboring New Taipei City also recorded a year high of 37.5 degrees in Banqiao District, according to CWB data.

The bureau said, other areas of Taiwan also experienced temperatures of 37 degrees or higher on Wednesday due to a strong high pressure system over the Pacific Ocean. It advised people to take precautions against sunburn and stay hydrated.

to five typhoons this year and there is a good chance these will be moderate to strong in intensity.

The bureau released its typhoon projection for this year on Monday, estimating that about 21-25 typhoons will form in the western North Pacific Ocean from June to December in 2017, close to the annual average of 23.1.

About three to five of those storms could directly impact Taiwan, close to the annual average of 3.6, the bureau projected.

The intensity of a typhoon is measured by the maximum average wind speed near the eye of the storm. Based on the wind speed, the CWB divides typhoons into three categories — tropical storm (minor intensity), typhoon (moderate intensity) and typhoon (strong intensity).    [FULL  STORY]
