Torrential rain warning issued for Nantou, Pingtung and Yilan

TAIPEI, Taiwan — The Central Weather Bureau issued an extremely heavy rain warning Friday for the central county of Nantou and mountainous areas of Pingtung County in southern Taiwan and Yilan County in eastern Taiwan, due to a strong convective system.

Residents in northern Taiwan’s New Taipei, Hualien County in eastern Taiwan, and Yunlin, Chiayi counties and Kaohsiung City in the south were also warned of heavy rain, lighting, gusting wind and swollen rivers, the bureau said.

As of 5:50 p.m., Pingtung’s Sandimen Township had recorded accumulated rainfall of 96.5 millimeters, and Nantou’s Guoxing Township had reported accumulated rainfall of 92.5 millimeters, with accumulated rainfall of 96 millimeters in Yilan’s Jiaosi Township, according to bureau data.    [SOURCE

 

Rain will last until Thursday: weather forecast

TAIPEI, Taiwan — The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) forecast Sunday that the current wet weather will

continue until Thursday due to a hovering front and the southwest monsoon, with showers or thundershowers expected around Taiwan.

Because of the front and monsoon, the island would receive showers or thundershowers on Sunday, said CWB forecaster Lin Po-tung (林伯東), noting that the bureau has issued an extreme heavy rain warning to the areas south of Taichung, Miaoli County and mountainous areas in Hualien County.

Northern Taiwan, Yilan County in northeast Taiwan, mountainous areas in Taitung County in the southeast, and the island groups of Penghu and Kinmen were within the range of the CWB’s heavy rain advisory.

Lin said there would be less rain in southern Taiwan’s mountains on Sunday compared to the previous day, but people in other parts of the island should be aware of sudden downpours.    [FULL  STORY]

Strong monsoon forecast for next week in Taiwan

Taipei, June 9 (CNA) The weather across Taiwan and on its outlying islands will be mostly sunny on Friday, with afternoon showers in the northeastern parts of the country and mountainous areas, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

According to the bureau, most parts of the country will see sunny to cloudy skies on Friday as a high pressure system intensifies.

Daytime highs in most areas will soar past 32 degrees Celsius, with the greater Taipei area and flat parts of central and southern Taiwan expected to see temperatures of 34-35 degrees at noon, when the solar ultraviolet index will be at its peak, the CWB said.    [FULL  STORY]

Extremely heavy downpour expected around Taiwan

Earlier the weather bureau released heavy or torrential rain advisories to 19 out of 22 cities and counties of the country.

Those receiving a torrential rain advisory include: Taichung City, Nantou County, Chiayi County, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County.

The casualty was a woman who was swept away while riding a motorcycle in the Bali district of New Taipei City just before noon. A rescue operation found her body two hours later, reports said.

Lai Chien-hsin (賴建信), head of the Water Resources Agency (WRA), noted rainfall recorded in winter in 2017 was 160.61 millimeters less, the second lowest rainfall recorded since 1963 where rainfall declined 168.79 millimeters, according to statistics compiled by the agency from Dec. 1, 2016 to Feb. 22, 2017.

Due to lower rainfall during winter season, science parks from north to southern Taiwan, New Taipei City and Taoyuan City governments deployed preemptive water conservation strategies earlier this year, said Lai.    [FULL  STORY]

Temperatures expected to rise to 30 degrees Celsius this weekend

Taipei, April 14 (CNA) The weather will be dry and warm on Saturday, with daytime temperature expected to rise to 27 to 30 degrees Celsius in the northern half of Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) predicted Friday.

The CWB forecast temperatures in the southern areas of Taiwan will reach 30-32 degrees C.

Comfortable weather forecast for Tomb Sweeping Festival weekend

Taipei, April 1 (CNA) Rain brought by a moist front is expected to stop Saturday, giving way to dry and stable weather for the remainder of the four-day Tomb Sweeping Festival weekend, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

Due to the influence of a continental cold air mass, temperatures around Taiwan will remain low Saturday, when day-time highs will range between 17 and 20 degrees Celsius, the bureau said.

Temperatures to drop to around 12 degrees Sunday

Taipei, March 25 (CNA) A continental cold air mass has arrived in northern Taiwan, bringing cold and wet temperatures Saturday with the mercury likely to dip to 12 degrees Celsius Sunday, meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) said.

Wu said that rains will start to move southwards Sunday and the public could feel even colder than a dry and cold weather pattern, urging the public to keep warm.
