Environmental Protection minister Li Ying-yuan is urging local people to
respect the conclusions of an environmental assessment on the Shen-ao
coal-fired power plant in New Taipei.
Speaking to reporters today, Li says such assessments are often
controversial, but in this case every side has been given the chance to voice
their opinions.
He says people should believe in the assessment report, which gave the green
light to Taiwan Power’s plan to reactivate and expand the power plant.
Responding to former President Ma Ying-jeou’s calling for opening the fourth
nuclear power plant, Li points out that it was during Ma’s term that the
plant got moth-balled after Japan’s nuclear disaster in 2011.
He has also reiterated the policy goal of a nuclear-free homeland in 2025,
saying, “we will keep this promise.” [SOURCE]
