Taipei, July 29 (CNA) A junior exchange student from Panama at Taiwan’s Central Police 40278238University was honored by the New Taipei mayor Wednesday for his bravery in nailing a thief in Tamsui, a popular tourist destination in the northern municipality.

In a meeting with city police, Mayor Eric Chu (朱立倫) presented an award to Jorge Luis Pitty Contos and praised him for being able to put into practice what he has learned, using the skills in which he was trained at the police university to subdue a thief.

Contos was attacked by a thief while he and his friends were sitting chatting on a beach near Tamsui while appreciating the sunrise in the early morning of July 26.

Unfortunately for the would-be robber, however, Contos is this year’s champion of Taiwan’s Joint College Judo Competition, so the police student, who speaks fluent Mandarin, easily nailed the thief before marching him to the Tamsui police precinct.     [FULL  STORY]
