PORTLAND, Ore. (Jiji Press) — An international committee agreed Friday that Japan will acquire an extra catch quota of 300 tons for large Pacific bluefin tuna from Taiwan as a temporary measure in 2020.

Japan’s large bluefin tuna catch quota for the year will effectively increase by about 6 percent based on the agreement reached at a meeting of the Northern Committee of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission held in Portland.

But Japan’s proposal for increasing overall bluefin tuna catch quotas was not adopted due to opposition from the United States.

Currently, Japan has catch quotas of 4,007 tons for small Pacific bluefin tuna weighing less than 30 kilograms and 4,882 tons for larger tuna.    [FULL  STORY]
