New Taipei City mayoral candidate Hou You-Yi on Monday called on the government to abort the construction of a coal power plant.

Construction has begun on the controversial coal-fired power plant in New Taipei City. The central government approved the plan despite a predicted negative impact to the local ecology and protests from residents and local officials.

Hou held a press conference and signed a petition along with twelve city councilors to protest the construction.

KMT mayoral candidate Hou said the government has ignored professional opinions about the plant. He said New Taipei City can harness cleaner energy sources.   [FULL  STORY]
