Amnesty International has commended Taiwan in its latest report for progress on human rights issues.

The report acknowledged the election of Taiwan’s first-ever female president last year. It also praises Taiwan for its effort in pushing for equal marriage rights for same-sex couples. The report cites the successful first reading of a same-sex marriage bill at the Legislature as a notable step forward. It also mentions the city and county governments in Taiwan that allow same-sex couples to register as partners.

The report include the new administration’s decision not to prosecute 126 protesters who previously trespassed in the Legislature, and the Supreme Court’ s recent decision to allow, for the first time, a criminal subjected to capital punishment to file an appeal.
