review of the Labor Standards Act. This is part of a long-term policy to reform the country’s labor laws.

The move comes at a time when a controversial amendment to the labor law concerning working hours is making its way through the Legislature. Cabinet spokesperson Hsu Kuo-yung said the government has different short-term and long-term goals for revising Taiwan’s labor laws.

“Our policies can be divided into long-term, medium-term and short-term. [The latter] is the subject of our recent amendment. There is no change to our commitment to protect the rights of workers. We have four areas which will not change, and four areas where we want to be flexible. This is what we are addressing in the short term. In the longer term we want a comprehensive review and the premier was talking about long-term policy,” said Hsu.     [FULL  STORY]
