The victims were on their way to the wedding banquet when the tragedy happened. The car of seven people was travelling south towards Taiwan’s western Changhua city to attend the wedding of their former classmate Fan Sheng-yu, who was marrying his long-time girlfriend Chen Chun-ying when the overcrowded car lost control on a bridge. Reports said one of the vehicle’s 13-year-old tyres burst while the five-seater van car was over a bridge, causing the driver to lose control. It plunged down from the bridge into a ravine, killing six, and injuring one. Amongst the dead were the best man as well as a bridesmaid. Despite the tragic loss, Sheng-yu and Chung-ying decided to go on with the wedding reception, but symbolically left a table of seven for the unfortunate friends who could not attend. The banquet lasted just 30 minutes as people kept their silence and did not smile until thanking and greeting the bride and groom at the end of the reception. (ends)
