TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Breaking a Chinese taboo, a Taiwanese flag appeared on a
board at the Chengdu Open to denote tennis star Lu Yen-hsun’s (盧彥勳) citizenship, reports said Wednesday.
China does not recognize Taiwan as a country but only as a breakaway province, and has forced international sports organizations to use the name “Chinese Taipei” when denoting the island.
A board presenting Lu’s picture and basic tennis stats still listed his country as “Chinese Taipei” in English and Chinese, but instead of showing the specially designed flag used for that name in sporting competitions, it showed the real Taiwanese flag.
Lu’s brother, Thomas Lu (盧威儒), told the Chinese-language Apple Daily that in the past he had never really noticed which flag they used for Taiwanese participants in Chinese tennis events. He assumed it must have been a “mistake,” which he said was funny, so he had taken a picture of the big screen. [FULL STORY]
