Taiwan judo athlete wins gold medal at Baku Grand Slam

of Serbia in the women’s 57-kg judo final at the Baku Grand Slam 2017 in Azerbaijan on Friday, making her the first Taiwanese to win a Grand Slam gold.

The 29-year-old Lien, currently a member of the Komatsu Women’s Judo Team in Japan, is the first Taiwanese judo athlete to compete in Japan’s professional league.

She became the first Taiwanese to win a medal in a grand slam competition in 2010, when she bagged a bronze in the Grand Slam Tokyo.

In 2016, Lien represented Taiwan in the women’s 57-kg event at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro but lost the bronze medal match to Kaori Matsumoto of Japan.
