The fall armyworm is now being reported in almost all areas of Taiwan.

The government has kicked off the second phase of its battle against the invasive agricultural pest the fall armyworm.

The fall armyworm destroys over 300 types of plants, including key crops. It is also able to reproduce and spread rapidly.

Since the first sighting of the fall armyworm in Taiwan on June 10, its presence has been confirmed in almost every region. As of Monday, the only places free of the pest were the southern city of Kaohsiung, the central county of Nantou, and outlying Green Island and Orchid Island. The total number of confirmed sightings has reached 65.

The first generation of the fall armyworm to arrive in Taiwan will soon give way to a second. The government says it’s impossible to determine with scientific accuracy whether work to eliminate the pests’ larvae completely has worked.    [FULL  STORY]
