The Mainland Affairs Council says that Taiwan will offer assistance to Hong Kong citizens on a case-
by-case basis. Since June 2019, Hong Kong has erupted in pro-democracy protests, stemming from a proposed extradition bill that would have allowed the transfer of fugitives between China and Hong Kong. The bill has since been axed, however protests continue. Demonstrators have turned to Taiwan for assistance, citing fear of being persecuted by the Chinese government.The Mainland Affairs Council says that Hong Kong citizens do have certain protections under current legislation.
