TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwanese tennis star Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) announced Wednesday that she would not represent Taiwan in the women’s doubles event at the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, as an act of protest against the local tennis association’s selection system for coaches and players.

On the social-networking site Facebook, Hsieh said she was bowing out of the women’s doubles event at the Olympics and would be representing Taiwan in the women’s singles only.

“I have decided to play the women’s singles only, for which I have been preparing for a year while facing the risk of injury,” Hsieh said in a post on Facebook.

Hsieh said she made her decision because Chinese Taipei Tennis Association (CTTA) had criticized her former coach and accused her of being the worst player among the five who would be representing Taiwan in Brazil.     [FULL  STORY]
