TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Foreign laborers will no longer have to leave Taiwan after spending three years working here, according to a decision reached by a legislative committee Wednesday.

The proposal still needs a second and third reading though.

The eventual change will affect up to 14,000 foreign workers a year, and end the requirement that they have to end a job in Taiwan after three years, saving them money in airfare and labor brokers’ fees, reports said.

The decision in favor of the change was unanimous at the meeting of the Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee Wednesday morning, reports said.

The amendment of Article 52 of the Employment Services Act would also benefit employers, because under the present system they are suddenly faced with an employee having to leave after three years, saddling them up with a period when they have to go without the employee or have to look for another one.     [FULL  STORY]
