The United States has pledged to offer greater assistance to Taiwan’s efforts to
participate in the World Health Assembly, starting immediately.
The health minister, Chen Shih-chung, on Thursday met with the US health secretary, Alex Azar, in Geneva. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the ongoing World Health Assembly (WHA). Taiwan has been barred from attending the meeting due to pressure frm China.
Chen said the half-hour meeting was very successful, with the US side promising to help Taiwan’s efforts to take part in WHA activities, immediately following the meeting. Chen said the US highly affirms contributions and achievements in global health and disease-prevention initiatives.
The minister also said he anticipates greater cooperation with the US under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF). Chen said the scope of cooperation projects would be expanded in the future.
The meeting was attended by six American officials. In addition to Secretary Azar, an assistant secretary of state was also present at the meeting. Chen also invited senior US officials to attend the Global Health Forum in Taiwan in October. [SOURCE]
