The Yilan County Government has fired the first shot by imposing land taxes of up to five times the norm on underutilized lots in the county’s industrial parks to support the Cabinet’s effort to ease the land shortage for industrial properties.

Acting Yilan County Commissioner Derek Chen (陳金德) on Thursday said he is taking an inventory of underutilized plots of land under his jurisdiction and will levy additional land taxes on vacant plots at rates two to five times the regular rates to promote land development.

Chen’s move came after the Cabinet made plans on Nov. 6 to free up to 1,422 hectares of underutilized land for industrial use in the next four years as part of an effort to encourage investment in Taiwan.    [FULL  STORY]

E Ink forecasts unchanged Q4 revenue

‘SEASONAL EFFECT’:E Ink spokesman Patrick Chang says that shipments in the fourth quarter generally come down after the peak season experienced during the third quarter

E-paper display supplier E Ink Holdings Inc (元太科技) yesterday forecast that revenue this quarter would be little changed from a year earlier — revenue was NT$3.47 billion during the final quarter last year — as robust demand for e-paper displays for electronic shelf labels and new e-notebooks would offset its exit from the LCD business.

However, the forecast represents a decline in revenue of about 28 percent this quarter from last quarter’s NT$4.79 billion (US$158.83 million).

“The company is seeing the slow demand of seasonal effect in the fourth quarter. As evidenced in most fourth quarters, shipments come down after the demand peak in the third quarter,” E Ink spokesman Patrick Chang (張元培) told a teleconference with investors.

“We expect revenue this quarter to reach a level similar to that of the fourth quarter last year,” he said.    [FULL  STORY]

TIER expects economic growth to slow

‘DYNAMIC STABILITY’:The central bank might maintain its position on the local currency amid a mild acceleration in inflation and stable prices for raw materials

The nation’s economy might expand 2.3 percent next year, mildly softer than the 2.5 percent estimated for this year, as main trading partners might fare slightly weaker due to a lack of patent growth drivers and a high base of comparison, the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER, 台灣經濟研究院) said yesterday.

The economic landscape ahead looks fair, allowing major economies to continue to recover, although their pace might differ, TIER economist Gordon Sun (孫明德) told a news conference.

The US and countries supported by raw materials are likely to perform better next year, while Europe, China and Japan might slow a bit in the absence of stimulus, the Taipei-based institute said.

Europe, China and Japan account for about 55 percent of the nation’s exports, limiting the growth forecast for next year in exports including services to 3.26 percent and imports to 3.11 percent, Sun said.    [FULL  STORY]

The airline plans to use the new 72-seat ATR72-600 aircraft on three flights per week between Taichung and Kinmen and two between Taichung and Magong in Penghu.

The new aircraft is part of FAT’s efforts to modernize its aging fleet. Of its eight McDonnell Douglas MD-80 planes, six are 20 years old or more and two others are approaching that age, Tseng said earlier this year.
