(AmCham Taipei, 台北美國商會) has urged the Taiwan government to boost its sluggish economy by fostering a more attractive business environment for foreign investment.

The editorial in the chamber’s Taiwan Business Topics monthly magazine in October said that Taiwan needs to take advantage of all possible ways to reinvigorate its economy in an increasingly unfavorable environment of falling exports and anemic domestic consumption.

“One policy suggestion that appears on almost every list of potential solutions is to heighten Taiwan’s capability to attract foreign direct investment (FDI),” AmCham Taipei said.     [FULL  STORY]

decline, dropping for the sixth consecutive month, amid weak global demand and signs of a slowdown of the world’s economy, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) said Saturday.

The ministry is scheduled to release the September export data on Oct. 20.

In August, Taiwan’s export orders fell 8.3% from a year earlier to US$35.03 billion, as global demand showed signs of slowing.     [FULL  STORY]

Property transactions are likely to slump more than 30 percent this year, though developers have lowered asking prices by between 10 percent and 20 percent to spur buying interest, but to little avail, online research body HouseFun (好房網) said yesterday.

Property transfers — including homes, commercial space and land deals — might shrink 32.43 percent to NT$2.5 trillion (US$76.91 billion) this year, based on HouseFun’s forecast, compared with NT$3.7 trillion last year, according to the government’s Web site.

HouseFun head Ni Tze-jen (倪子仁) attributed the downturn to property tax hikes and expectations of deep price falls.      [FULL  STORY]

whether the new iPhone 6S she bought came with a processor supplied by Samsung or Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC).

The child, who is at primary school, insisted that if his mother had bought the “wrong one,” she should return it as soon as possible. “My classmates are all talking about this and they said the difference is huge,” the boy told his parents.

My neighbor then learned about a Facebook page for primary school students in Hong Kong, where the discussions focus on tech gadget issues, including the reported difference in battery performance between iPhone 6S models using Samsung’s chip and models using the chip supplied by TSMC.

International investors have also picked up on the issue and have been buying up TSMC stock at relatively low prices.     [FULL  STORY]

Hermes Microvision posts lower third quarter profit

By: Lisa Wang  /  Staff reporter

Semiconductor inspection tool and equipment maker Hermes Microvision Inc (HMI, 漢微科), which counts Intel Corp as a major customer, yesterday posted a 32 percent sequential decline in quarterly net profit for last quarter, but it expects growth momentum to recover this quarter to drive revenue higher.

Hermes expects the upturn to extend into next year.

“We are optimistic about 2016, which will be a better year than this year,” company chairman Shu Chin-yung (許金榮) told an investors’ conference.

The growth is to come from rising demand for its e-beam inspection tools, as its customers migrate to advanced 10-nanometer (nm) technology, coupled with orders and shipments postponed from this year, Shu said.     [FULL  STORY]
