of one of its new smartphones had copied Apple’s iPhone, saying HTC’s is a pioneer metal-clad design.

“We’re not copying. We made a uni-body metal-clad phone in 2013. It’s Apple that copies us in terms of the antenna design on the back,” Jack Tong, president of HTC North Asia, said at a press briefing at the Taiwan launch of the One A9.

HTC enabled the ecosystem in terms of the design breakthrough in radio signals for a metal-clad phone, Tong said, referring to HTC’s One M7 that was unveiled in 2013.

“The A9 is made thinner and more lightweight than our previous metal-clad phones. This is a change and evolution, and we’re not copying,” he said.     [FULL  STORY]

earlier, dropping by the slowest pace for the period in seven years as the ongoing economic slowdown subdued a more noticeable seasonal decline, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said yesterday.

The unemployment reading has shed 0.08 to 0.17 percentage points each September from 2009 to last year as the job market emerges from the impact of new graduates, DGBAS deputy section head Chang Yun-yun (張雲澐) told a press conference in Taipei.

“The 0.01 percentage point decline is insignificant and a rare phenomenon at this time of the year, indicating demand for labor is weakening amid the slowdown,” Chang said.     [FULL  STORY]

Failed luxury auctions prompt calls for regulators to lower yield requirements

The nation’s commercial property market might continue to stall unless financial regulators agree to lower yield requirements for life insurance companies, analysts said yesterday after two top-tier office buildings this week failed to secure any buyers.

The Financial Supervisory Commission’s Insurance Bureau said it would review the restriction by the end of the year after Taiwan Insurance Institute (保發中心) wraps up a study on the issue.

“The yield requirement should have an inverse relationship with investment risks and a 2.5 percent minimum is more reasonable,” from the current 2.805 percent, in regulating property investments by domestic life insurance companies, said Tony Chao (趙正義), managing director of international property consultancy Jones Lang LaSalle’s Taiwan office.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei (晶華酒店), expects food and beverage revenue to stay flat this year from last year due to an economic slowdown and a NT$100 million (US$3.08 million) renovation of a popular buffet restaurant, senior executives said yesterday.

The five-star hotel on Taipei’s Zhongshan E Road houses eight restaurants and a dozen banquet facilities to meet the needs of wedding receptions and other functions.

“We expect food and beverage revenue this year to be about the same as last year’s figure of NT$2.3 billion” having spent two months renovating the buffet restaurant, FIH food and beverage general manager Simon Wu (吳偉正) told a media briefing.     [FULL  STORY]

decreased 50% on average in the first eight months of the year, with New Taipei recording the steepest decline of 67%, according to data released Sunday by a real estate company.

The decrease was due mainly to government policies that are aimed at reining in high-flying home prices, said Huang Shu-wei, a manager in the research department of Yung Ching Realty Group.

Other factors included growing caution among high-asset groups amid an economic slowdown, and uncertainty ahead of the Jan. 16 presidential and legislative elections, Huang said.

Under Taiwan regulations, luxury homes are defined as housing units valued at more than NT$70 million (US$2.17 million) in the capital Taipei, more than NT$60 million (US$1.8 million) in neighboring New Taipei, and over NT$40 million (US$1.2 million) in other areas.     [FULL  STORY]

Public confidence in the economy and stock market remained weak this month, a survey by Cathay Financial Holding Co (國泰金控) showed yesterday.

The poll showed that 55.9 percent of respondents expect the economy to deteriorate in the coming six months, while only 14 percent hold an optimistic view and 6.1 percent had no opinion.

The prevailing pessimism reflects major economic data suggesting that the economy likely contracted last quarter, Cathay Financial economic research department assistant manager Achilles Chen (陳欽奇) said.

However, the economy could pick up this quarter, with the advent of the high season for technology products and retail sales at home and in the West.     [FULL  STORY]
