Makalot Industrial Co (聚陽), a garment manufacturer for global clothing brands, expects this quarter and next quarter’s revenues to grow by at least a double-digit percentage year-on-year on the back of growing orders for functional clothing, Makalot chairman Frank Chou (周理平) said yesterday.

“The final quarter of the year is usually slow for Makalot due to seasonal factors, but thanks to a global increase in demand for sportswear, orders for the fourth quarter are at least 20 percent more than the same period last year,” Chou told reporters on the sidelines of an investors’ conference in Taipei.

Makalot reported unaudited pretax earnings of NT$1.32 billion (US$42.03 million) in the first half, up 29.1 percent annually, with consolidated revenue growing 12.4 percent to NT$10.75 billion from the same period last year.

Taipei, July 20 (CNA) Swiss brokerage firm UBS Securities has cut its forecast for the Taiex, Taiwan stock exchange’s benchmark index, for the end of the year from 9,750 to 9,200 points, making its third downward revision in two months.

Taiwan’s exports slowed down in the first half of 2015, and “we believe conditions are unlikely to improve substantially in the second half,” William Dong (???), equities and research head of UBS Securities’ Taipei branch, wrote in a note to clients on July 17.

“With many tech companies citing low demand visibility and/or ongoing inventory adjustments, we believe a seasonal pickup in tech shipments may prove short-lived,” Dong said. “One exception though is Apple’s supply chain.”     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, July 20 (CNA) The top two Taiwanese personal computer brands recorded sharp 201507200007t0001shipment declines in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region in the second quarter of 2015, as the overall market continued to suffer from weak demand, according to tech research firm IDC.

The total PC shipments in the EMEA region reached 17.2 million units in the April-June quarter, posting a 21.6 percent decline year-on-year, the IDC said in a July 17 report.

Taiwan’s Asustek Computer Inc. (華碩) climbed to fourth place in the EMEA PC rankings, but its shipments declined in line with the market at 21.1 percent year-on-year.

IDC said that Asustek’s limited volume of low-cost PCs shipped with Microsoft Corp.’s “Windows 8.1 with Bing” operating system reduced the vendor’s exposure during this quarter.     [FULL  STORY]

The dual-deck, four-engine jetliner manufactured by Airbus, which is currently the largest passenger airliner in the world, flew in from Dubai, arriving at 4:40pm, with 475 passengers on board, including former Taiwan premier Sean Chen.

Emirates, which launched seven daily flights to Taiwan in February 2014 using Boeing 777 jets, was also the first airline to land an A380 aircraft at Taoyuan Airport near Taipei, which installed two double- decker jet bridges in May to accommodate the ultra-high-capacity aircraft.

Terry Daly, Emirates divisional senior vice president, said on July 17 that the airline is assessing the possibility of using the popular A380 on regular flights to Taiwan.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s stored-value card market, is hoping to follow EasyCard in trying to raise the daily spending ceiling of its card, the company said Saturday.

Wang Kuo-tsai (王國材), chairman of the Kaohsiung-based iPass Corp., said his company’s card now allows holders a maximum single payment of NT$1,000 (US$32) and accumulated payments of no more than NT$3,000 per day, similar to the existing spending limits for the EasyCard.

But he said the company is trying to encourage card holders to make more small-value purchases with the card and therefore hopes the daily ceiling can be raised.

The iPass card, which still operates in the shadows of the dominant EasyCard, can be used to pay for rides on the Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit and other public transportation systems.     [FULL  STORY]

It can also be used to make purchases at Taiwan’s four major convenience chain stores and to pay government service fees and hospital bills.

Taipei, July 18 (CNA) The Council of Agriculture (COA) said Saturday that suppliers of substandard pet foods will face fines soon if their products are found to be potentially harmful to pets, as the government tries to protect a growing number of cats and dogs raised by households in Taiwan.

Wang Chung-shu, deputy director of the COA’s department of the animal industry, said that the council had set standards to prevent pets from pathogenic microorganism and animal health hazards. The standards are scheduled to take effect at the end of July or in early August, he said.

Under Taiwan’s Animal Protection Act, the COA has been authorized to write the standards for allowable levels of pathogenic microorganism and animal health hazards for pets’ safety. Wang said that any pet foods suppliers who violate the standards could be fined NT$50,000 (US$1,597) to NT$250,000 based on the magnitude of the damage.     [FULL  STORY]
