Taiwan to launch health and tech forum seeking foreign collaboration

Project to help encourage growth in the biotechnology and health sectors and partnerships among Taiwanese and foreign companies, reports our Chinese-language sister newspaper Want Daily.

The project, initiated by Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare, will be carried out by Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA). In its early stages, it will emphasize partnership with countries including the UK, Germany and China.

TAITRA had staged a series of investment conferences in Stuttgart, London and Beijing in April and May and plans to organize a forum at the Taipei International Convention Center on June 18.     [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan’s products losing market share in Vietnam: MOEA

Taipei, June 5 (CNA) An official of the Ministry of Economic Affairs said on Friday that 201506050034t0001Taiwanese products’ share in Vietnam’s total imported goods market has been declining in recent years to just 7.5% last year, lagging far behind China, South Korea and Japan.

In 2014, products from China occupied 30.3 percent of Vietnam’s market for imported products, those from South Korea 14.7 percent, Japan 8.7 percent, and Taiwan 7.5 percent, according to the official, who cited government statistics from Vietnam.

Despite the fact that Taiwan’s exports to Vietnam continued to grow over the past few years, from US$6.25 billion in 2009 to US$11.08 billion in 2014, Taiwan’s market share was dropping, said the official.     [FULL  STORY]

Wednesday that it is optimistic about the launch of Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system due to its user-friendly features.

“I think there are many improvements in the recent versions of Microsoft’s products, which are designed to better fit user habits. I’m optimistic about it,” Pegatron CEO and president Jason Cheng told the press on the sidelines of Microsoft’s keynote speech at Computex Taipei.

Pegatron, which makes notebooks for Asustek, Toshiba, Acer and Hewlett-Packard, is expected to ship 850,000 notebooks in May, an increase of 17% from April, due to new projects from clients, according to Kirk Yang, Barclays’ head of technology hardware research for Asia.

Tiffany Huang, president of Acer’s corporate business planning and operations, forecast that the adoption of Windows 10 will accelerate next year when business users begin to replace their older computers.     [FULL  STORY]

9,348.63 points, its lowest level in four-and-a-half months, following speculation that foreign institutional investors added a net 10,000 short-position contracts in the day.

Yesterday was the fourth straight losing session on the main bourse since the government relaxed the stock-trading band on Monday to 10 percent, from the previous 7 percent, in line with international trends.

Turnover expanded to NT$135.17 billion (US$4.35 billion) from the previous session’s NT$100.93 billion, according to the Taiwan Stock Exchange’s data.     [FULL  STORY]

Dealers said that the selling reflected a lack of investor confidence in HTC’s outlook at a time when fiercer-than-ever competition in the global smartphone market has imposed tremendous pressure on the firm.

Shares of HTC fell 5.79 percent Wednesday to close at NT$92.80 (US$3.01) with 25.41 million shares changing hands. The weighted index on the TWSE ended down 0.6 percent at 9,556.52 points.     [FULL  STORY]

Taipei, June 2 (CNA) Charles Rivkin, U.S. assistant secretary of state for economic and business affairs, encouraged young Taiwanese entrepreneurs Tuesday to embrace risk-taking and not to be afraid of failure.

Speaking during the opening of a workshop in Taipei, Rivkin, a former businessman, cited his previous experience in the entertainment industry to participants in the Future City Workshop.

take effect from June 1, according to the country’s Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC).

The measure is aimed at improving Taiwan’s market efficiency, stimulating trading and aligning the local market with international norms, the FSC said.

In addition to stocks, the expanded 10% limit will also apply to other trading-related products, including Taiwan Depositary Receipts, call and put warrants, beneficiary certificates and Taiwan Futures Exchange contracts.

The margin ratio for securities margin transactions will also be increased from the current 120% to 130%, which was first implemented May 4 to allow investors to prepare for the change.     [FULL  STORY]

AU Optronics Corp (AUO, 友達光電), the nation’s No. 2 LCD panel maker, yesterday told shareholders that the LCD industry this year would remain healthy because TV replacement demand for bigger TVs would boost demand by 10 percent annually this year.

“It is a trend for consumers to opt for new TVs with bigger and higher-definition screens this year.
