For the first time, deaths from cancer exceeded 48,000, reaching 48,037 last year, representing a record 28 percent of the 171,857 deaths recorded in the year and an increase of 277 deaths from 2016, ministry tallies show.

Administrative Court ruling that questions the constitutionality of the Act Governing the Handling of Ill-gotten Properties by Political Parties and Their Affiliate Organizations (政黨及其附隨組織不當取得財產處理條例) would not affect its operations.

The ruling was handed out on Monday on three separate cases filed by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), Central Investment Co (中央投資) and Hsinyutai Co (欣裕台) on Nov. 18, 2016, which asked the court to revoke the committee’s finding earlier that month that the two companies are affiliates of the party.

The committee later ordered the KMT to transfer to the government all rights to its shares in the two companies on Nov. 29, 2016.

The court said in its ruling that it would request a constitutional interpretation from the Council of Grand Justices, as it found that several articles in the act, on which the committee based its decision, could potentially contradict the Constitution.    [FULL  STORY]

and the Ministry of the Interior for failing to protect the rights of intersex people.

Between 0.05 and 1.7 percent of the population is born with intersex traits, Control Yuan Vice President Sun Ta-chuan (孫大川) and Control Yuan member Gau Fehng-shian (高鳳仙) said in a report, citing UN statistics.

Based on the upper estimate, there might be 400,000 intersex people in Taiwan, they said.

The ministries have gathered no significant data on the intersex population and have never taken measures to conduct studies on the community, Sun said, adding that they have “ignored the existence of intersex people.”

Beijing Warns US on ‘One China’ Policy Over New American ‘Embassy’ in Taiwan

On Wednesday, a spokesperson with China’s Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council expressed opposition to any official contact between the US and Taiwan after the opening of a new compound for the New American Institute – a de facto American embassy – on the island.

There should be no official contact between the two countries “in any form,” spokesperson Ma Xiaoguang said Wednesday. “The US should adhere to the One China principle and the three joint communiques between China and the US so as not the undermine bilateral ties and peace and stability in the region,” he warned, China’s Xinhua news service reported.

“Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party administration will only further damage cross-Strait relations by implicating foreign powers,” Ma added. “The Taiwan issue, which is vital to China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, remains the most important and sensitive issue in China-US relations.”

The remarks come after the US dedicated its new de facto embassy in Taipei on Tuesday, the same day that US President Donald Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore. The American Institute in Taiwan has existed since 1979 as offices scattered across Taipei. However, this is the first time that the institute has been given its own compound.    [FULL  STORY]
