supports all of China’s legal claims in the South China Sea. That country is Taiwan, though China says that Taiwan is not a country, but only a rogue province of China that will return to Chinese control as soon as possible.

For the last few years, Taiwan has been governed by the pro-China Kuomintang (KMT) party, which favors the “one China” principle and unification with mainland China, and which has fully supported all of China’s claims in the South China Sea.

But Taiwan is about to hold new elections on January 16, and the KMT party is expected to lose to the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Of Taiwan’s two major political parties, China has always been very friendly with KMT, and very hostile with DPP. China has frequently threatened military action if Taiwan’s leaders take any political steps towards independence from China, and those threats have almost always been directed at the DPP.     [FULL  STORY]

arrived at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport early Sunday morning with his wife.

Manuele Christopher and his wife were welcomed by a hearty performance of lion dance and would later be treated to dining at the famous Din TaiFung Dumpling House at the Taipei 101 all because he was the 10 millionth overseas visitor to Taiwan in 2015.

Christopher’s arrival not only marked the first 10 millionth overseas visitor to Taiwan in a single year, but also signified Taiwan’s achieving the status as a major tourism country.

Christopher said they will stay in Taiwan for 2 weeks, and would most like to visit night markets and eat stinky toufu and pineapple cakes. “Very friendly” is his first impression of Taiwanese people, he added.     [FULL  STORY]

recently been launched to help them land jobs in Taiwan, with the rate of successful job placements having reached a record high of 58 percent, according to the Workforce Development Agency (WDA).

“Many immigrants are industrious, hard-working and responsive to employers’ demands, which is just what the current job market wants,” Director of the WDA Liu Chia-chun (劉佳鈞) said in a statement on Friday.

Helping new immigrants find jobs not only enables them to become economically self-reliant and attain a sense of achievement in their work, but also can supply an important labor pool for an aging Taiwanese society, Liu said.     [FULL  STORY]

explain the controversy revolves around the KMT’s selling of its party assets.
The Democratic Progressive Party on Friday called on the Kuomintang to publicize its campaign finances to explain the controversy revolving around the KMT’s alleged selling of its party assets on the eve of the presidential election.

At a press conference Friday, the DPP suspected that the KMT is trying to get rid of its party assets, publishing advertisements calling for buyers for 26 plots owned by the KMT, according to media reports.

DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen stressed that the KMT’s party assets have always been the root for the unfair competition in Taiwan’s politics, which has greatly harmed the development of the country’s democracy.

The KMT’s assets sell-out has made people question if the party is trying to raise the funds needed to cover its election expenses. While the DPP has already made transparent its campaign finances, Tsai called on the KMT presidential candidate, Eric Chu, to do the same. “Transparency and honesty is the best policy,” said Tsai.

英文) yesterday called on the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) to stop selling its controversial party assets, questioning whether it is doing so to avoid supervision from the next legislature.

“The public should take this seriously. The KMT is trying to sell off its party assets before the legislative and presidential elections,” Tsai said in response to media queries while attending a campaign rally for the party’s legislative candidate in Taoyuan’s Jhongli District (中壢).

“I suspect that [the KMT] is selling the party assets with the intention of avoiding examination and supervision of the new legislature after the election and therefore I call on KMT Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) to refrain from selling party assets prior to the election of the new legislature and the passage of legislation on political parties and party assets,” she said.     [FULL  STORY]

its verdict on the man who stabbed four passengers at the Zhongshan Mass Rapid Transit station, reports said Friday.

The July 20 attack by Kuo Yen-chun was the second major incident to hit the Taipei MRT after a student named Cheng Chieh killed four and injured more than twenty on May 21 last year.

Kuo, 27, used a fruit knife in an attack on three women and a man on an MRT station escalator. He was overpowered by guards and by members of the public before he could kill anyone or leave the station.

Prosecutors, who charged him with murder, said at a court session Friday that they hoped the verdict would be severe in order to discouraging others from endangering the safety of MRT passengers. As the situation stood now, passengers didn’t have even the most basic feeling of security, prosecutors were quoted as saying.     [FULL  STORY]
