from Fangyuan Township of the western Taiwan county of Changhua, the Central Weather Bureau said.

However, most parts of Taiwan will continue to experience rain and strong wind brought by Dujuan as the island is still under its influence, it said.

After a three-hour stay in Taiwan, Dujuan has weakened and its radius narrowed as a result of the geographical impact of the island.

The bureau said that as the typhoon is moving northwest and then west-northwest, it is expected to hit the offshore island of Penghu soon although it will continue to weaken.

Taipei, Sept. 28 (CNA) Water supplies in parts of Taipei were suspended Monday due to 23778505the effects of Tyhoon Dujuan, with one official estimating that the suspension could affect up to 1 million households in the city in the 24 hours after 7 p.m. that day.

As of Monday evening, the raw water turbidity at the Zhitan Water Purification Plant in Taipei had reached 12,000 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU), meeting the threshold for a shut-down, said Chen Man-li (陳曼莉), deputy director of the Taipei Water Department.

According to a new standard operating procedure (SOP) adopted by the water department, Taipei’s water purification plants will cut back their operations if the raw water turbidity reaches 6,000 to 12,000 NTUs and will shut down altogether if the turbidity exceeds 12,000 NTUs.

Around 25,000 households in Taipei had their water supplies suspended from 7 p.m.     [FULL  STORY]

a lucky turn in his young life that nearly ended prematurely earlier this year, an animal charity group said.

Aptly named “Lucky,” the young black male canine was picked up as a stray puppy in February in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan, said Ni Jing-tai, a spokesman for Animal Rescue Team Taiwan.

He nearly died of multiple wounds that may have been caused by other strays, Ni said.

Veterinarians were able to save his life but his two hind legs became paralyzed because of the wounds he had sustained.

Luckily he is now able to move around and even run with the two wheels that are strapped to his body, Ni told reporters.

Workers of a animal welfare group based in Canada learned the story of Lucky’s recovery and found a family for him so he is flying out from Kaohsiung Sunday night with five other dogs to begin their new lives, Ni said.    [FULL  STORY]

Taiwan as Typhoon Dujuan approached the nation, gathering strength as it bore down on the east coast.

The military, working with local governments, evacuated people from areas vulnerable to falling rocks, mudslides and flooding in 39 townships and districts in Yilan, Hualien, Taitung, Hsinchu and Nantou counties and Taipei and New Taipei City.

New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu (朱立倫) said the vulnerable areas include Wulai District (烏來), which was hit hard by Typhoon Soudelor last month, with some residents unable to return home for weeks. Most shops and hotels in the hot springs town remain closed as roads and flood damage are yet to be fully repaired.

“To be honest, we all feel very depressed. Any damage might further prolong the time needed for reconstruction,” said Chou Chih-kang, an Wulai neighborhood leader.

Television footage showed fast-moving flood waters swamping roads just outside Taipei and huge waves crashing against the northeast coastline.     [FULL  STORY]

undergoing surgery and rehabilitation that has greatly improved her condition.

“I want to thank all the good friends I made in Taiwan,” said Pu Shuang-ting, a seven-year-old of Chinese descent who lives in a mountainous area of northern Myanmar, said before her departure.

Pu has a swollen tongue that keeps growing and cannot be withdrawn into the mouth, affecting her speech and ability to eat. Because her tongue was three times normal size, she constantly bit her tongue and caused it to bleed.

Pu and her mother and aunt were brought to Taiwan in May by Taiwan Root Medical Peace Corps, a private non-profit organization, which encountered the girl’s condition during a trip to Myanmar last year.

Lee Hsiao-ping, her attending surgeon at Taipei’s Tri-Service General Hospital, carefully assessed her condition before performing surgery so that her tongue would not pressure her respiratory tract and endanger her life.     [FULL  STORY]

powerful winds and heavy rains.

Typhoon Dujuan is forecast to hit Taiwan’s east coast on Monday evening. As of Monday afternoon, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 231 kph (144 mph), according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

The current forecast track calls for the storm to pass just south of Taiwan’s capital city of Taipei, home to 2.7 million people.

But it was expected to weaken somewhat before making landfall as the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane, according to CNN meteorologist Guy Michael.CPvTB1GU8AAKJUR

Taiwan weather authorities issued a sea warning as the storm approached, telling people in coastal areas to beware of rogue waves, the island’s Central News Agency reported.

Before it reaches Taiwan, Dujuan will brush past Japan’s small, thinly populated Yaeyama Islands.     [FULL  STORY]

The bodies of two missing AT-3 pilots were retrieved and airlifted to the Gangshan Air 6704840Force Academy in Kaohsiung City Sunday noon as family members of the deceased waited in solemn despair upon their arrival.

In full military honors, the bodies of Major Wang Chin-chun and First Lieutenant Huang Chun-jung were lowered onboard a S-70C helicopter to an awaiting ambulance as their colleagues from the Air Force saluted and wept through the passing of their brothers-in-arms.

The wreckage of the AT-3 plane was discovered after a helicopter team had located the crash site around 6 a.m. Saturday. The ground rescue teams made up of special forces soldiers also managed to find the two bodies inside around noon.

Around 5 a.m. Sunday, an Air Force S-70C rescue helicopter hovering above the crash site has had to abandon its attempt to airlift the dead pilots to return to its airbase in Hualien to refuel. However, the crew returned around nine in the morning and on their second attempt, the airlift was successful.     [FULL  STORY]
